So with the wife finally graduating in June, she's just accepted a job out in BFE (New Lenox) and I think we will need to move closer to where she works in order to help manage the commute. Right now we live in Roscoe Village and I work downtown. We are looking I guess to move more to the southside of the city and want to stay in the city, but I've bought into the media and am absolutely enthused about living on the southside. So we are looking for a place with access to the city by CTA or Metra for my job and access to the interstates to get her to her job. I know nothing about the best places to live other than around the northside area where I have lived, and only have lived in Chicago like 6 years. Anyone able to help me out with some suggestions, advice, comments about where I should start looking? We are renting right now, but I wouldn't mind trying to figure out how to buy a place, I just have no idea where to start that either.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Head south until you sse the sign that says Cairo. Once there, continue southward until you see another sign that reads "Welcome to the Sunshine State."

Just sayin'

Florida is the last state I would ever move, it may be fun to visit, but what a clusterfuck.

I was thinking about maybe hitting Indiana on the boarder, but that doesn't make her commute too much better.

I've spent two vacations in Hilton Head and Beaufort now and I really like that area. First one was a week long vacation in hilton head with my (now) wife and my best friend his brother and our other friend. We rented a house for a week and have as many stories about the drive down as anything else. block from the beach what fun we had. He was born in Beaufort, but barely remembers it as they moved just before he was 4, and so we went back again last august for a destination wedding of his. Again it was great, especially having already been down there. I couldn't believe how nice it was being so close to Savannah and Charleston, went to both, both were great. So when you make it out there, save a room for me.

Beverly is the best neighborhood in the nation to me. But I grew up here and am biased. But based on your fandom, excessive drinking you would fit in particularly well, especially if your planning on having a family. Metra is in the neighborhood. For real, look up Beverly/Mt. Greenwood area. Plus a block away from my house there's a fucking castle, not sure what more needs to be said to sell the neighborhood

Yeah I saw something about Beverly, it's on the list with Bridgeport, I don't know anything about them really, but will be looking into those as well. I assume we'll be starting a family here in the next year or so, so this is another big thing. We are around 30, and still like to pretend we're young but it's about time to do the family thing if I can just get the finances settled first.

You don't appear enthused about that.

That sounds like a possibility, I'll put it on the list, I'm just not sure exactly where it is so I'll have to look that up, she wants to stay in the city which is the funny part, I don't really care, I just don't want to be way out in the boonies like New Lenox seems to be.

As for the family, I'm more than enthused actually, I am just one of those odd people who want to be totally planned and prepared for it. Financially mostly. I want to be at a good place to be able to have a good home for the child, and financially ready to where it doesn't totally kill us. Kids cost way too damn much, and I know everyone will say, yeah yeah yeah well you can't worry about that because they are going to cost an arm and a leg no matter what you do you'll be broke, but you know what, I just don't accept that. I accept that I won't be able to do and buy things that I want, but it's not acceptable to me as a responsible parent to just not care about being fiscally responsible. If I want to be able to give my kids everything they want it starts before they are born.

well thats a good mentality to have.

Yeah New Lenox is out in the boonies although not as much as it used to be with this new fangled I-355. If 355 didnt exist it would take me a hell of alot longer to get there from where i am.

Yeah honestly, I say that, but don't really know too much because I have very limited experience with the city and suburbs in general. Haven't only lived here for a short time, I've lived in the same general area the whole time. It's really all I know, which is probably the main reason I started this thread, need help expanding my chicago horizons.

Tinley, Orland, Frankfurt area would be decent too. Trains to the city, easy access to I80, I294, I57 and not far from I355 and I55. Lots of shopping, dining, and entertainment in that area as well. Mix of new and old homes and plenty of rentals. Demographics are still mostly white, fourth or fifth generation americans. Schools are decent with all the Lincoln Ways, Stag, Carl Sandburg, etc. You could even build a palace for a decent price in some parts of Frankfurt that are half developed. My sister did so a few years ago.

Mt Greenwood is older folks in bungaloes so you could get a good deal on a fixer upper from a long time owner that is passing away or moving to a nursing home. It is still pretty close to the suburbs I mentioned above so the benefits would be similar.

If you know of a good realtor in that area, have them drive you around to check out various areas.

You can scope out price ranges then too.
