Well the Lions got a 2nd and a 3rd for Hockenson so if we end up trading Kmet for similar value because for whatever reason he is expendable I consider that a win.
I think if they had taken Warren I would view that as more of a Kmet replacement.

You initially said Kmet would be with the drafting of Loveland.
I just pointed out that it didn't work out well for Detroit with Hockenson and Laporta as Hockenson was quickly traded away. To that you responded well the Lions were able to trade him.
I do agree that was a great trade for the Lions, if the bears could get that much back for Kmet I would be happy, but I just don't see it personally. I also don't see a world where they keep Kmet, probably look to get rid of him in a year and if they do I hope they get value for him. I do get the impression he is one of the good locker room guys with this character thing they are so desperately pushing every year, would be kinda weird to extend him and then look to trade him so quickly.
Idk man, just not making sense to me.

He's right, Kmet and Warren have a lot of overlap, just like Hock and LaPorta, which is why they traded Hock -who is the worst blocker of all the TE's in this conversation.
Loveland and Kmet will compliment each other in the offense. We'll see how much they value that after this year.

I guess we will see in time but I don’t see Loveland as a replacement for Kmet. Totally different type of player. Warren I’d see as a replacement.

It’s not a direct replacement, but I can’t see them deciding to pay both down the road, so they’ll probably move on from Kmet by the time he’s due to be paid.

Ok that’s a different conversation. I think you have these two for the next 3 years, 4 max and then probably let Kmet go at that time. They won’t pay big money for both of them I’d agree on that.

I completely agree here.
The issue is the salary cap. The bears just signed a big contract to a C, a guard, and they are looking to pay Thuney. That's 3 interior lineman presumably under big contracts, Darnell wright is deserving of a contract extension when time comes, and they will either need to pay Braxton or make some type of investment there.
Cole Kmet is the currently the 8th highest paid TE in the NFL. They just drafted a TE at 10 overall.
This just isn't sustainable considering team building strategies, and I would hope they could pay a pure blocking TE much less than Cole Kmet, if that is going to be more of his role now.

Yeah Kmet will not get another extension after this one if Loveland turns out to be good. The 24 year old Loveland will get his money and Kmet will be traded.
This is the great thing about having the cheap QB for the next 3 years, they can afford this luxury right now. It’s a 3 year window that they should be doing everything they can to capitalize on without mortgaging beyond it.
2028 if Caleb works out is going to be a completely different type of structure as he will be extended for huge money.

For sure. I just think if you are trying to win right now the biggest glaring issue on the roster is the lack of a pass rush. Also with Billings gone the run d was not great either. Hopefully he comes back fully from his injury? Maybe the bears try to address that meaningfully today, but they passed on some guys that could be very very very good.
Nolen has all pro potential, and Harmon could be a very good player as well as some of the other edge rushers they passed on.

Having an Elite TE gives you the best chance to score points. Every Dynasty needs one in the modern era in order to be a successful offense and win superbowls. The few namable dynasties and Super bowl contenders all have elite TEs. Kelce Gronk Kittle all kept their teams in contention for the entirety of their careers. Thats what were trying to do... not make playoffs... but contend for superbowls. ... I know baby steps...
The reason the Bears and Ben Johnson are genius is because they are finally for the first time in history ahead of the league trends and not following them. When everyone wanted to go 3-4 we were the last team in the league to follow the trend and it failed miserably. When fast quick little route running receivers trended we were last in line to those. Heck even drafting a modern ERA QB took until Cutler was traded for as we were still a run first offense in a passing league.
The Two TE set was a relic of the "Establish the Run First" era and only the greatest of all time coach Bill Belichick ran a two TE set that absolutely took the league by storm. With 2 first round TEs he built an unstoppable offense and nobody ever tried to duplicate that system. Having 2 TEs forces 3 linebackers onto the field, the most common coverage in a 3 linebacker system is some form of Cover 2. An outdated defensive scheme due to the speed and ability of the slot WRs and TEs in the modern era. Given teams respond defensive to a slot WRs with running the nickel 60% plus. They've turned into a 3-3-1 Hybrid linebacker style defense known simply as the 3-4.
The only answer to the modern 3-4 and the Nickel is the 12 personnel with Elite TEs. Loveland and Kmet have the potential to take advantage of defenses when they trot out a 3rd linebacker and the offense will have a much easier time with play action and running the ball if they throw the nickel on the field.
I love what the Bears are doing on offense and I could go on all day about why I think this will lead to success. In fact I've been begging for us to run a two TE set for a decade given the trends in the NFL. So hopefully Kmet sees a resurgence under Ben and Loveland develops into a strong playmaker in the offense. Bear Down

I am not saying they will cut him this year. I'm saying that after this year he's probably not worth his cap number to the Bears or to other teams. Maybe Johnson will use him a bunch in the passing game, but he's never used TE 2 much in the past.
The Bears cap situation is ok, but it certainly isn't great. They will have $6m or so this year after the draft.

Yeah I’ve wrote that my choice was edge at 10 after Banks went. 49ers took the guy that I thought was a perfect fit here. I did not want this TE, but here we are.

Kmet knows his days are numbered here. I’m pretty sure his agent knows this. Kmet should be thrilled though—he can have all the time in the world for podcasts now!
The league knows the Bears aren’t keeping him next year so the Bears have no leverage. They won’t get much for him in a trade, if anything at all. Unless they get Pace to do something stupid in Atlanta, which is a possibility.
