CNM, I think you mean "patronizing", and it wasn't really that bad. Definitely called for with the "dah here are da tings da Cubs gotta do to win: trade soriano, sign Dunn and Pujols..." type posts that have been flung around this section of the board.

Thats more of what I'm saying.

Like I said.. I agree with the premise of what he's saying.. Just could have been stated better.

Because they play in a stadium that doesn't make nearly as much money as their competitors and they don't own their own TV network.

I hope Ricketts does follow through on the Cubs Net idea that has been thrown around in the past.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Fire
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. North Carolina Tar Heels
Cubs are the 2nd MOST MARKETABLE team in MLB...there is NO REASON they should have top 3 PAYROLL in baseball...if Ricketts doesnt spend the money then ALL CUB FANS should stop going to games......

Doesn't really work that way.

When you are tied up into contracts like fukudomes, Big Z's, and Sorianos, your going to be stuck with them for a while. No one will take those contracts on.

In reality, the Cubs wont be good for another 4-8 years.. if that. It's gonna be a while before they can do what they did in 07-08. Sign guys, and bring in big names.

Best bet is to just feed through the minors.

Don't know about 4-8..

Maybe 3-5 if done correctly.

Ricketts owns 25% of CSN, so I doubt he can get out of that very easily. Plus doesn't the WGN tv contract run until the end of time?

I'd love for the Cubs to create their own network, but that is probably a long way away.

It will be interesting to see what kind of revenue the 2014 plan generates. I don't think they plan on adding any seats, but they are pouring like $400 million into the renovations, so I'd imagine some revenue generating things are going to be added.

There can always be games on WGN..

Would be nice if they could get the Comcast games on a new network.

I wonder if Reinsdorf would be willing to buy out the Cubs share of CSN and make it his own network for the White Sox and Bulls. Could help both teams.

Just spit balling, obviously it is way more complicated than simply making a phone call and a sale though.

It will be interesting, but in the end, what are they really going to be able to do to generate quick and easy revenue? They will already be $400 million in the hole with the "triangle building", and it's anyone's guess as to how much revenue per year that will bring in, as well as when it will pay itself off and start generating profits. As for the easier avenues towards revenue, they aren't planning on adding much to the seating capacity (if at all), refuse to touch the bleachers, can't add more luxury suites, and they have to scratch and claw their way through the local zoning committee's to put up simple signage, not to mention deal with the meatball fans whining and crying about changing the "aura" of Wrigley Field.

Honestly, I'd prefer they find a piece of land somewhere in the suburbs and build a new stadium. If you are going to invest all this money, why not go all out?

Of course this will never fly with the fans, and if the Ricketts are clawing for the half a million dollars they saved by trading Ryan Theriot, I doubt they can find $1 billion somewhere. It's a shame, because if the Twins can have a $100 million payroll because of their new stadium, the Cubs could go back to throwing monopoly money around.

I'm not saying they'll spend a fortune, but I'd like to know where you are all getting your information. It was Ricketts himself that Rosenthal was talking to before reporting that the Cubs offseason plans were signing a left-handed slugger, trading Fukudome and strengthening the rotation with or without Z.

And Captain Obvious analyzed the whole payroll situation for a scenario where they could get Dunn, and even Kerry Wood and Cliff Lee and it evened out to only like 6 Million more than this year's payroll.

Do you think the Cubs fanbase would be as strong without Wrigley? Or with a field surrounded by parking lots in the suburbs somewhere?

I think that would cut into a significant chunk of the Cubs fanbase.
