Do you think the Cubs fanbase would be as strong without Wrigley? Or with a field surrounded by parking lots in the suburbs somewhere?

I think that would cut into a significant chunk of the Cubs fanbase.

Not sure if this would be the prevailing opinion...

But I think a successful Cubs team draws the fans. If the Yankees can blow up Yankee Stadium, there is no sacred place IMO. It wouldn't be hard to duplicate the field, walls, ivy, dimensions, whatever of Wrigley.

Actually, a more accessible, clean, modern ballpark would be so much more appealing to me as a Cubs fan. I would probably be more likely to go to a game in a new place than I am Wrigley, even with a bad team like this year.

He was lowballing the hell out of arbitration numbers.

Still, only 103.5 Million committed to next season. What do you think it is after arbitration, say they Non-Tender Hill and Baker?

I still think they can sign people if they actually want too.

And you didn't respond to Ricketts being the one who was talking to Rosenthal (they said during the last Cubs game that was on Fox).

In ballparks, yes.

We would still have plenty of fans going to games if we built a new stadium.

People would ***** and moan after the announcement. They would complain the whole time the new place was being built. Then the new ballpark would be unveiled and everyone will rave about it. The players will talk about how great it is, people will want to go check it out, and (with a few exceptions) people will come around to the new facility quickly.

If the need arises to appease what will quickly become a vocal minority, the Cubs could still play a series a year at Wrigley. I really don't think that would be necessary though.

Recent sports history is full of historic stadiums being replaced with modern facilities. Yankee Stadium being the most dramatic and recent, but Tiger Stadium is gone and that fan base survived, Busch Stadium in STL was replaced and that fan base survived.

If this season has taught us anything about Cubs fans, its that they are really not that different from other fans. The team sucks, and the crowds are thin. Wrigley isn't the selling point that some think it is, the product on the field is always king.

My point exactly.

Quade was on XM radio yesterday and told guys he doesnt see Colvin at 1B...he sees him as RF for Cubs for long time...So this means they still could go after Dunn in offseason in which i think will be mistake. Rather wait to see if Cubs can get Pujols,A-Gone, or Fielder the following year.

You don't pass up on Dunn for a CHANCE at a better 1B next year. Pujols will most likely resign, Gonzo probably will too, and Prince will cost over $20MM/year.
dunn will not be a cub next year. and lets just say there is this miracle and they do sign him, gluck fixing all the other holes this team has. it would be a bad move for the cubs, especially on a 4 year deal.

How is it a bad move to add a bonified slugger to the line up? Dunn would be a great move for the Cubs.

Dunn, Pujols and Pena will not be Cubs next year. Idk where anyone is getting that idea. There is no money for it.

Except that we won't have Lee and Lilly's contracts and most likely we will trade at least some of Z and Fuku's contract.

This man understands. No Cliff Lee either and you'll have to buyout Zambrano if you want to get rid of him.

Negative. We will have to pay the majority, but definitely not all of his contract.

any fan living in the world where the offseason is going to be the cubs feasting on major FAs is living in a make believe world.

This isnt fantasy baseball guys.

I don't think we will "feast" on them. However, I do think that we will sign a big name. Singular, as in one.

Cubs are the 2nd MOST MARKETABLE team in MLB...there is NO REASON they should have top 3 PAYROLL in baseball...if Ricketts doesnt spend the money then ALL CUB FANS should stop going to games......

They should. But they won't.

Doesn't really work that way.

When you are tied up into contracts like fukudomes, Big Z's, and Sorianos, your going to be stuck with them for a while. No one will take those contracts on.

In reality, the Cubs wont be good for another 4-8 years.. if that. It's gonna be a while before they can do what they did in 07-08. Sign guys, and bring in big names.

Best bet is to just feed through the minors.

You are high. We have 3 bad contracts, two of which I think will be moved this off-season. In reality, the Cubs have a shitload of prospects that are about to be major league ready within 3 years. I see us making a run at the WS in 2013.

He was lowballing the hell out of arbitration numbers.

Not really. Marmol is probably worth about 10-12 million on the open market. He is in his 2nd year of arby, so I think 6 million is very reasonable. I think he will get closer to 5, but IIRC, I went with 6 million for him.

Marshall won't get that big of a raise because he is "just" a set-up man. 3 million is what he will probably get. I think I originally put 2. Same with Gorzo, he is probably set to make about 3. I see Geo making between 3 and 4. So with Cliff Lee, we would be over. However, I think the Cubs are smart enough to stay away from Cliff Lee and the Ricketts will be happy with a decreased payroll.
