Lemme see

fell off slide landed on head at age 7

hit in head with baseball bat at age 9

knocked out trying to do back-flip while skiing age 15

.

.

.

probably lots in between

.

.

.

diving off railway bridge and hitting bottom of the river with my forehead age 23?

running full speed and hitting face first into goal posts age 29

These are just the ones that I think knocked me out. So I have likely had a few, but can't relay any symptoms I might have encountered.

Hmmm, maybe this explains a few things.

Only 2 here and they are both Navy related. First one was my fault entirely I was drunk and found out my roommate was telling my girlfriend that I wasn't home every time she called an he tried to keep chatting her up. He even too my picture of her and put it in his wallet. Well I confronted him and tried to headbutt him , he slipped free an I ended up bouncing my skull off a off his metal bedpost. I had a nasty headache for weeks, swelling around where I hit and I fainted close to 6 times that week.

Next one I was climbing up a ladder on the ship and the metal hatch came free as the ship rocked an it slammed off the side of my head, chipping my skull ( there still is a floating chip on the side of my head) and I had absolutely no balance, couldn't keep my food down.

The Navy refused to test me either time, but the symptoms fit with concussions. I had a cat scan recently and it does show some scar tissue. They asked why it wasn't documented. I love this organization lol

only one for me but it was nasty.

freshman year in high school hockey. i'm not a big guy even today, but in 9th grade i was small and got absolutely destroyed by a 6'2" senior in the 3rd or 4th game of the season. caught a suicide pass center ice off a breakout got "toews'd" at the red line. don't even know if the puck made it to my stick yet.

missed the next 3 months. couldn't leave the house for a couple weeks. like mentioned above, the lights and noise was the worst for me. constant headache and nausea feeling. better believe i keep my head up now.

I was very lucky compared to the injuries here. I was riding in my buddies car heading to his moms house to meet up with friends and watch movies. That was when a drunk driver decided to cut us off and we t-boned at around 35/40mph. ended up with a few pinched nerves, blunt chest trauma, soft tissue damage to my lower spine, and a "mild" concussion. The headaches, the dizziness, nausea, and memory loss was there for about a week...that I could remember.

We found out that the drunk was wanted for a few warrants in Colorado. he was only three blocks from home.

I'm curious to know if anyone here has ever had a concussion. If so, what did it feel like, and what were the personal symptoms you experienced? I'm always reading about NHL concussions and the 'book' definition of the symptoms players have. But I'd like to know what some of the specifics are that keep the concussion an ongoing and lingering issue for months or even years.

I have had 2. First one grammer school football second one I was climbing out of a ditch and hit my head real good on the excavtor bucket. Would you like one ?

Yea one of mine is similar with the memory loss. I have a small chunk that is missing from one of my ears...apparently it is from one of the helimachopper crashes I had. I have no recollection of that flight, but I am on the crew list and have the cracked helmet. Then again I pretty much do not remember coming back to the States a week later. Always found it odd and never knew it was diagnosed as a concussion until I got my full medical file when I was out processed 12 years later.

What's a helimachopper? And was your flight shot down?

Helicopter, but all of the cool (or really old) kids call it a helimachopper. There was an incident according the the report, but nothing conclusive as to what caused the mechanical failure.

I've had several. One as 4-5 year old kid. Did a face dive off the front room bannister to the foyer (about a six foot drop), lucky for me the pile of winter boots/coats in the foyer somewhat broke my fall. Don't recall much about it. Don't know if its the concussion itself or just that it happened so long ago. Another when I was about 11 years old, was warming up/playing catch before a neighborhood baseball game and backed up into a kid taking practice swings. Had one hell of a gooseegg and headache, but thats about all I rmemeber about it. Last one 17 years ago took a spill while mountain biking landed flat on my back/ass and my head bounced off a rock. Thank god I was wearing a helmet. Probably saved my life. Cracked that sucker in half. I was woozy for about 1/2 a day and had headaches for a week.

My son had a severe one 3 years ago. They were playing dodgeball at school and he ran into a wall while dodging. Knocked himself completely out. Was unconscious for 5 minutes, and confused for about 30 minutes. He has amnesia from just before the injury and for about 2 hours after. First thing he remebers is wondering why he is getting a CT scan in the ER. Had nausea, drowsiness, headaches for a few weeks. Missed an entire year of sports, but now he is fine.

Probably good you don't remember it - I wouldn't want to remember falling from the sky. The fact your helmet cracked indicates you hit really really hard. Was anyone killed in that crash?

Aren't there more permanent or long term possibilities though with major concussions? For example, does your son have any long term effects like slower learning abilities or personality changes you've noticed - even if slight?

Potentially if they are not treated appropriately (treatment is basically rest). He was treated appropriately and we held him out of all sports for a year just to be safe, even at home/around the neighboorhood. Included not letting him go on trampolines, skateboard, ect.... He appears to have made a full recovery except for the amnesia part immediately after the injury, he can't remeber anything. If he has more injuries, obviously yes there could be lasting symptoms. Cumulative injury and improper treatment are the biggest issues IMO.

The reason there was mechanical failure was because it was a helicopter, they always break.

That they do. Something about a lot of fast spinning parts flexing in weird ways and under pressure.

While serving in Alaska a friend and I drank nearly a fifth of Wild Turkey. I remember the gathering, drinking and then waking up the next day in my bed in my dorm room. Blood on my shirt and wondering where the hell I was and what happened. Apprarently I was found lying next to an iron radiator with a nice gash on my head. Since we were drinking underage on base they did not call anyone and I never received medical care. I am nearly 100% positive it was a concussion and on the more severe level. The next few days I barely ate, was nauseous all the time and dizzy. I remember it being more then a week later to start feeling normal. As mentioned before bright lights would make my head spin and sometimes it sounded like people were screaming when they were just talking to me. A loud noise would make me want to vomit as well.

The have a bunch of of seemingly random moving parts, going in different directions, strange vibrations, things not doing what they are sposeda. Helicopters don't fly. Earth rejects them from it's gravity.

Probably.

LOL This is probably about right also.

Never was diagnosed with one but I do have vertigo and if concussions are anything like vertigo I have no idea how anyone in their right minds can play with one hindering. I have no idea how Hossa plays with his vertigo issue (that is if he really has one). Sometimes I can't even step onto a little shuttle boat when it flares up. 3 minutes on one and when I step off I feel like I have just been on a roller coaster and it can take hours to settle (sometimes a couple days). I can't imagine playing hockey while in a vertigo flare up.

Anyways the good thing about vertigo (if there is a good thing) is it comes and goes in flare ups (much like herpies I would guess). Sometimes can go years without a hint of it. And it's why I don't drink often...feels like I am drunk when I am in a flare up so that's sort of fun I guess.

Concussions seem much more dangerous. As Pete said it took them too long in pro sports to take concussions seriously he really nailed it on the head (pun intended) it's a bruise on the brain..that can not be good!!
