wtf is a shopping cart lock?

Aldi's requires you to put a quarter in to get a cart, then you get the quarter back when you return it. I went there for the first time once and didn't have a quarter, so some old lady gave me one. Then I check out and they don't give you bags, you're suppose to bring your own. So I had to carry my shit out with my hands and give my quarter back to the old lady. I've never been back.

I have wiped out half a forest for my own personal gain, of having large quantities of firewood

Yeah but the forest has nearly wiped you out a few times....

No frills = cheaper prices. You save money by not having to pay for the hidden costs of extra employees and cart damage in the parking lot.

Aldi used to be kind of a crappy place to shop, but they've changed a lot. It's still kind of creepy down and dirty and they don't have a lot of variety, but now they're selling a lot of organic and gluten free items that are much cheaper than you can find in the bigger stores. Yeah, a lot of people are turned off by their off brand items, but the stuff is actually pretty decent and they've gotten rid of a lot of the unhealthy crap like hydrogenated oils, dyes and MSG.

Big deal, so you have to drop a quarter to grab a cart and you have to bag your own shit. I'll gladly do it to save 20% and eat a little healthier if all it takes is to show up prepared.

(Stop bein' a lazy ass.)

Didn't realize that having a negative shopping experience at a store made you a lazy ass. Good to know.

Yes this is true, probably why my wife wants to move to the suburbs.

After your superb recommendation, I'm half tempted to give Aldi's another shot, but I don't live within 30 miles of one so I think I'll pass but you can continue to shop there and buy your organic, GMO, cage free, gluten free healthy food.

They had a wicked sale on milk this week. Antibiotic & hormone free. Very important in my fight against growing middle-aged moobs.

You think you save 20% on groceries because people have to pay a quarter to use a shopping cart?

Yes! That must be the only reason!

Edit:

Ok... the non smart-ass answer:
Aldi wants you to pay a .25 cent deposit on the cart so that you are encouraged to return the cart to get your quarter back. What that does is it keeps the carts close to the store. They're not paying someone to shag the carts and they're not sitting in the parking lot rotting in the weather, getting damaged or causing damage. It's only part of what they do to keep costs down... and considering the average Aldi customer would probably kill someone for a quarter, it's actually pretty effective.

That I can't deny.

To avoid the use of stereotypes, I'll stick with creepy down and dirty.

The chain is a union-ran grocer. You pay a $0.25 "deposit" for the shopping cart. You pop the qtr in, it unlocks the cart. You get the QB (lol) when you return the cart and pop the lock in it.
