Looking at the goaltender salaries http://capgeek.com/leaders/?season=2013&type=SALARY&position=G&limit=25

and seeing the trends of when they were signed length and such. I'm feeling a little better about this contract. I would have liked one less year, but who knows maybe he'll retired at 34 haha. Either way when his contract is done in 2020 (unless the contract supersedes his final year? but they called it an extension) he'll be 34, and making 6 mil. Which is still less than quick who will have 3 more years at 7 mil and is only a year younger. Luongo who I don't have to explain. and Rask who will have one more year at 6 mil and is two years younger. Looks to be 13 goalies making 5+ mil like was said, and this puts him squarely in the middle. I bet he'll move down as time goes down and GMs continue to overpay. So I think this is a good deal for a great guy in the locker room who has been just as patient with the organization and they have been with him.

Well, it's just how it works in the cap era. You spend money on a position, and you have to sacrifice somewhere else. That's $1.5-2M they don't have to spend on defensive or forward depth. I think Crawford is a really good goalie, I just have a different philosophy when it comes to how to spend the cap space. Although, I guess there's really no difference here between 2010 and the goalie budget from 2014 onwards. We were paying Huet 5.6M to sit on the bench, as much as we all want to forget about it. :icon-lol:

So if they keep a budget backup, it can work out just fine.

Also, why not go through this? This forum has been dead during the offseason. Excuse me for taking a counter position and encouraging discussion. :icon-biggrin:

I look at it a different way. I'd rather have my starting goaltender solidified when I know I have a shitload of depth in Rockford that I can count on to produce, cheaply, in those 3rd and 4th line spots.

Also, EXCELLENT point on the Hawks cap situation with Huet backing up Niemi. After all, what does it matter whether the starter or back-up is making all the money? The core of the issue was a matter of $$ spent on a position, not whether or not the starter is paid too much. So there's a small "variable" involved there that is overlooked, which changes the entire dynamic of the argument.

The Hawks still have plenty of depth within the system, who's to say they are losing out on those 3rd and 4th liners? It's not like Fernando Pisani, Andrew Brunette, and the other veteran $2M players did anything with it. It's always been the Hawks youth. They can keep doing that with their core locked in. Hopefully Toews and Kane get lengthy deals too, but I'm not worried since I can't see the organization letting them go anyway.

Hawks have so much depth, top to bottom, some of these kids who would/could play on an NHL team right now, can't in Chicago. What happens when more of them come to age, here in the near future.

this year realistically 1 top six spot open? 2nd line Center. Next year, zero spots open top six?

It's a good problem to have unless you are those prospects. In that sense you wait to play for a possible future Champion, or go elsewhere to hit the big show.

Can't argue with much this organization is doing other than the massive rape at tickets. And really, that's just business.

Look at the deals that Brouwer, Ladd, Buff, Stalberg, etc.. etc.. received. None of them were consistently top six players, but all had a pretty good paycheck after leaving the Hawks. I think if I'm coming up through the Hawks system, I'm even more excited. Where else can you get a $4M contract out of your entry level deal? Seriously.

depends on how long you've waited. But there is going to be some good talent ready here very soon IMO. Some of these draft picks that will arrive in Rockford this year and the two following. Starting with TT which is not far from Kane's style of game supposedly.

Next two years there are NOT slots available assuming the top six remains basically in tact.

Not a bad thing if you can wait and the Hawks deem you worth keeping. Some may at that point just want to pay in the NHL.

On that note, the Ice Hogs, without the influence of players who don't want to be there to start the season, should be VERY, scary good this year. They were hands down the best team from Feb on last year and the AHL teams making the playoffs were breathing a little easier when they just barely missed the playoffs.

Good for Rockford.

The more I see people complain about his contract, the more I like the signing.

Call it an educated guess. It's happened here before.

I think Khabi's injury history is in question. He's just here to give Raanta some experience. Before they had Khabi, Niemi and Crawford.

I think maybe a mil to much and a year or two too long. Like you said not a big deal with a team that clearly knows what they are doing.

I think that's the main crux of this. you can still like the fact that a solid play is locked up even if the terms aren't perfect. A year here, a mil there is ****-all in a five year plan.

With the additions of McNeill and Danault up front and goaltending having the potential to be upgraded significantly, they should do a lot more than just make the playoffs. Which will be fun to watch with the Blues' new affilliate once again loading up with veterans to go for a Calder Cup instead of working on player development.

Not terribly enthused by this signing. Sure, I like Crawford, but for this money...hmmm. Bowman is gambling that the cap will keep rising and the cheap kids will come through. However, if the Hawks manage another Cup or two within the next few years, I don't really mind this.

Not much of a gamble, considering the league cut $20 million in annual losses by dumping the Coyotes on someone who is willing to eat another $50 million before moving them, 6 outdoor games this year, increasing TV ratings, and the quadrennial bump in popularity the Olympics bring. There are no more UFAs to sign - Handzus, Brookbank, Khabibulin and Bollig are all essentially disposable. Next year's backup (probably Raanta) won't cost the $2 million that Khabibulin does.

Bowman has been nothing short of outstanding in his management of the salary cap. There is no reason to expect this not to continue, up to and beyond extending Kane and Toews next summer (expect the announcement at next year's Convention).

And don't forget that Bettman made about 8 million himself this year... which pales to Goddell's 28 or 29 million or whatever it was. So he has some catching up to do. haha.

While Crawford had a great season last year, I would also attribute it to the Hawks more lock down play in their own end. The team overall adapted to the layers coverage many NHL teams are going to nowadays. IMO the shot quality was less this past year than the year before.

Still Crawford had a huge season as well bailing the team out plenty of times. The contract seems a little higher than I thought he'd get, but **** it. If he plays every year like last year it's a bargain.

too lazy to RTFT, but here's my two cents:

a little extra for the dicking around with him a few years back when he was already waiting and better than Niemi... plus he's earned it through his play and professionalism afterward. Not the worst contract, and i don't mind at all. Like RK was saying, Bowmans know what theyre doing.

Gameday: The goaltending sucks, it's all his fault they lost, softies, out of position, no rebound control, can't play the puck, doesn't matter how good the team is if they don't have a good goalie.......ect

wins cup

Off Season: Goalies are dime a dozen, doesn't matter who you put back there with this team.

Well Stan did have a hand in fucking up the Cap the first time so maybe he's learned his lesson. Although Tallon was blamed for it.
