From Fortunate Son to Lookin Out my Backdoor, CCR is not only one of the most underrated bands of all time, but dare I say it, better than the Rolling Stones. Preach.

I like CCR but it's total nonsense to say that they were better than the Stones on any level. The Stones albubm, Exile on Main Street is generally considered top 10 all time albums by most critics. From 1971-1975 there was no better quiatrist in the world than the Stone's Mick Taylor

Here is Mick Taylor on what many think is one of the greatest live performances. Check out his solos at 2:50 and 5:00. Fogerty couldnt do this in a 100 years.

True story about the Stones..Back in like 81, I worked with this black guy who was a huge blues lover..He knew I liked the blues as well, so he invited me to go to the Checkerboard Lounge on 43rd street to see Muddy Waters. We get in the place and the rumor started that the Stones who were playing in Chicago that night were supposed to be coming there..Sure enough, later on the Stones arrived. Muddy started playing and I could tell he wasn't playing his usual good stuff...The Stones got on stage and Jagger looked like a complete idiot prancing around like a tranny while Muddy was jamming..Then Richards started playing, and he couldn't even stay in line with what the rest of the guys were playing..He sounded like he played for a total of 6 months. he was off beat, and he was trying to play licks that didn't go with the music...Muddy Waters just kind of ignored them. Eventually they left and then the real music started..Muddy played all his best songs and the music was incredible. I never liked the Stones, but after that night I hated em, and still do. All the people in the place were snickering when they were on stage

I don't think popularity is a way to rank a band though. N-Sync was the greatest band of the 90s, it doesn't mean they were good.

Sidenote: I'm not comparing The Rolling Stones to N-Sync. I love the Stones, just not as much as I love CCR.

No doubt that Kieth Richards is a mixed bag. At his best he is the greatest rythym guitarist that ever lived. He is the riff master with more memorable signature riffs that you can count. OTOH, his drug use has negated huge chunks of his career. Countless times he has shown up in stage unable to give his best performance. I witnessed one at the stadium in 1977.

But all that said when Mick Taylor arrived in 1969 and for the next 5 years they were the greatest band in the world. Taylor is in the same class as Hendirx, Allman, Clapton, Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughn and the other greats. Richard was envious of Taylor's ability and it forced him to play his best. The Love in Vain clip I posted is layered and peerless in perfromannce. During those 5 years no one was performing live at the same level. After Taylor quit the band their live performances became loose and often incoherent. It's only been the last 5 years or so that they have returned to those standards of the early 70s.

that may have been dumbest comparison ever

How so? Daft Punk with their slick, funky house > old farts playing guitars.

And I'm an old fart who has played guitar for 24 years, so don't even think about going the "you don't get real music" route ....

I don't understand the logic of pitting one great band v another. I haven't found many deemed as good-things in life that I haven't eventually gotten sick of.

I agree with you. Anything to do with our own personal taste is subjective. Which bands we like better, which beer we like better, which women we think are hotter, all of it. No point in pitting one against another.
