Was rechecking the play-by-play for Samardzija. Tons of ground balls, not too many well hit, and the only hard hits were Heyward's homer and that last double-play lineout. Not bad at all.

While a bit lucky that last inning is the type of inning that a top of the rotation starter gives you. Had the tying run in scoring position, and managed to escape the inning unscathed. I called Shark and Volstad the biggest wildcards so far this season. I guess they cancel each other out with Shark being so awesome and Volstad not so much.

I'm of the mind that Volstad will improve. If not he'll probably just be tossed into the pen as the long man. But the peripherals suggest that he shouldn't be as bad as his ERA says.

Our starters aren't terrible. Garza is ace material...Samardzija is pitching like an above avg. #2, and we have Dempster, Wells, Maholm (looking better lately) and a cpl other swing starters. Our bullpen still needs work, as does the offense...but, in a rebuilding year, I'm okay w/ what i see, currently.

I am hoping that Cardenas gets the nod at 2B tonight.

I'm picking nits here, but I think you have to slot Garza and Samardzija down two slots. Garza has been good, but he's not an Ace. Not in the truest scouting sense of the word. He's a 2, which is awesome. Samardzija is a good 3, which is also awesome. The Cubs don't have a true Ace yet, those guys are extremely rare.

The starters are the bright spot of the team, I agree, but I just wanted to clarify that Ace, #2, #3 designation stuff.

Out of curiousity how many true aces are there in baseball? I am just curious. Perhaps that would be a good topic for discussion.

Probably about 5-10. 10 is probably the max. Aces have no negatives about them, not even the makeup can be a negative. They also have a proven track record, and you usually know who has the Ace potential when they come up.
For example, Kershaw is in the proving it phase, and he's passing so far. Verlander is probably the reference point for this generation's Ace label. A scout once said (forgot his name, it was a radio interview) an ace is elite 50% of his starts, above average 25% and good the other 25%.

I think if we sat down and thought about it we could come up with a list, I think it should def. be a separate thread though.
