Making moves will just make matters worse. The player development has failed completely. It’s been 8 years since the WS and how many homegrown players are on the roster that were drafted after 2016?
So….don’t make moves? You complain that we don’t have any homegrown players on the roster, and say getting players from elsewhere would make matters worse. So what is it you want them to do?

The deal was win win.

Cubs have issues with developing players. Ie Morel and PCA. Tampa has a history of polishing talent.

So it was a good deal for all involved. Biggie and Morel have a solid chance of developing into their peak ability now. Cubs got a finished product from the Rays methods.

Jed would be smart to do this with them more. Give them raw talent and get finished products with arb years sitting. Not a bad bed partner.

You go to extremes like nobody else.

A guy is the next Babe Ruth one day, and a bust the next. (See:Mervis, Matt)

What’s your expectation of a 20 year old in his first three months in mlb who hasn’t played every day?

You are always down on PCA simply because at 20, with 200 PA’s, he’s not Mickey Mantle 2.0.

He came to the cubs as a defensive whiz. He showed some power in Milb. The fact he isn’t a slugger now means the organization didn’t develop him! WTF?!

Making moves generally means going the FA route which is what will make things worse. The Paredes trade is a better move but how many of those types of deals are available at any given time? The Cubs would need a half dozen more. If you can’t develop your draft picks/international signings, you’re pretty much stuck on zero in baseball due to all the cost control you get with homegrown talent.

The Cubs have one of the deepest farms in the Major Leagues with top 100 prospects all close to majors. No team runs a complete farm team unless you are a small market franchise. The Cubs have a ton of ammo for trades and money to go with it.

PCA(Already on roster)
Cassie
Shaw
Ballesteros
Triantos
Horton

They are all a year away and some will be called up this year. This doesnt include Jordan Wicks and Ben Brown who are recovering from injuries.

Add in Alcantara who probably has the biggest ceiling of them all and is a top 100 prospect. The Cubs have a ton of ammo to compete

I'm pretty sure that Jed will ask high on Taillon and Leiter. Hendricks and Smyly he would jump at. Cody is more of a off-season issue as this injury nixed that deal.

If Jed does nothing else he won this deadline. He can go into the off-season looking at catcher and a closer via F/A and trades.

Just dropping Hendricks and Smyly alone removes 20M (Smyly has a 2.5M buy out and is a desirable person to get rid of right now for that reason)

20M gets you a top closer. I would prefer Jed to also target Jansen for catcher. That is where you want to deal Neris prior to his opt going to player opt

So the two guys that make sense are Smyly and Neris as they affect next year's plans and you want to remove those issues now.

At this point, Jed should unload Hendricks for a bushel of apples, he is done as a starter and holds minimal value as reliever as well..

I really hope this team doesn't fall for the sunk cost fallacy and think they need to start Parades at 3rd next year. He is not good. Poor range and his bat speed is so poor and he is so pull happy that he is somewhat useless unless the wind is blowing out at Wrigley.
