:yep::obama: I am still waiting for his offseason. I really wanna know what all that money would have gotten us. And you all argue among yourselves of course. :dealwithit:

D3A's opinion of how the team should be run
how he would have handled the offseason
difference between 08 09 and 10 rosters
where 60% of rebuilding teams fail comes from
Why HE CAPITALIZES EVERYTHING
Why he thinks Ricketts isn't a half decent owner
I'll think of others

Well done sir.

I'm sure after he's done you'll all have counterpoints. It'd be wonderful if you could discuss this without calling each other a bunch of flaming vaginas.

Anyone have a link to all the free agents available for 2012 offseason? I think MLBTR deleted that one. A lot of the free agents were super-meh and the ones who were worth a damn were either too old to give mega-contracts or re-signed by their teams.

Chicago Cubs | Cot's Baseball Contracts would ya look at that.. there goes D3A's cutting payroll argument, and the we're big market for long time argument. Looks like small to middle market till late 2000s

The leap in salaries happened because all of the extensions and contracts were heavily backloaded. So in the more recent years, when the contracts were in their tail end, that's when the Cubs would have to pay the most money.

I think d3a was talking about the cut between 2011's payroll and now. Since the Cubs basically don't have to pay Fukudome, Pena, Ramirez, Silva, Grabow and other folks I forgot about, the payroll will go down and the hope is that the in-house options will step in and give you some minimum production but for far cheaper. It kind of evens out.

The question then was which pieces would you buy off the market, and I still haven't found the 2012 free agent list, but then again I wasn't really looking that hard.

I know d3a is supposed to be responding to this, but I looked at the list vick linked to. If you sort by contract size, there's a pretty solid group of guys up top and then once you get past Ryan Dempster (who wasn't a free agent, just picked up his player option) the talent level drops off considerably.

So you look at the top list and we have...

Pujols
Fielder
Sabathia (re-signed with Yankees so doesn't count, I think he also might have done this in the exclusivity period so he was never actually available)
Jose Reyes
CJ Wilson
Buehrle
Papelbon (lawlz)
Rollins
Cespedes (I mean, really, A's?)
Aramis Ramirez
Cuddyer
Heath Bell (lawlz)
Beltran (this was a pretty badass contract)
Wainwright (Cards picked up his option so that doesn't count)
Willingham
Kubel (meeeeeh...)
Joe Nathan (eh)
David Ortiz (arbitration, so not actually available)
Cano (option, so not available)
Coco Crisp (trololol)

So that's the pool we have to work with. Just eliminate the guys who were optioned or otherwise unavailable. Everyone below that line is probably crap and not worth spending your money on.

So now you can do a retrospective...which guys from the list I posted above would you sign, and based on how much they did sign for, would they have been worth it and would they have made enough of a difference to pull the team out of the muck? And if you attempt to backload those contracts in order to artificially keep payroll low in the short run, you're just going to have the same problem the Cubs had recently.
