Except that Theo turned second round picks into Dustin Pedroia and Justin Masterson (who he traded to the Indians but is having a nice little career). So the economic impact and the added potential should be factors that people consider.

The good news is that the Cubs can spend on free agency this offseason and only lose their second-round and later picks if they throw money at Hamels, Greinke or Hamilton. If they sign guys with no qualifying offers, they don't need to lose draft picks at all. So there's ways to spend money wisely. Signing Prince Fielder to stupid money cannot be considered wise.

I dont get how signing a 28 y/o superstar is dumb but spending on a 31 y/o OF who got a bad history smart? Yes getting Hamels and Greinke would be nice but SP hasnt been the Cubs problem. Scoring more then 2 runs has been the problem.

I think the Cubs will actually spend some money next offseason. I doubt they get involved in the big time targets unless a few of the upper 20 something top pitchers hit the market, but I could be wrong.

The Cubs decided that a better use of resources was to try to spend a ton of cash on the last international amateurs that don't fall under the old rules. They certainly could have made the team better this team better, but how much better would they have been spending on free agents that would have actually accepted one or two year deals? I think they made the right choice, but it will take a few years to find out.

Because Prince Fielder sucks at defense. Not to mention that they probably had a plan in place to snag Rizzo so that they could have the potential for the same level of production at a fraction of the total cost.

Josh Hamilton also plays a more important defensive position than first base and has similar offensive production. It doesn't mean they're going to sign him though.

Because that 31 year old OF didn't cost the Cubs anything in terms of the future by costing a draft pick or lengthy deal that would likely to become burdensome in the last years of it like we are facing with Soriano now.
