Tseng had another big k game tonight

6.2 IP 6 hits 4 ER 1 bb 10 k's

His last 5 starts that's 36 K's in 32.1 IP with 13 walks. That's a 10.02 K/9 and a 3.62 bb/9 I'm honestly wondering if he's found some new deception or a new grip on a pitch.

He has a really good curve. Most likely he is able to spot it better

Thing I like the most is in 15 starts he is at 90 1/3 IP. He is avg 6 innings per start. That is providing stability to the pen on his days on.

Cubs' Eloy Jimenez: Showing improved approach at High-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Jimenez, 20, is hitting .279/.358/.510 with eight home runs and a 32:17 K:BB in 147 at-bats for High-A Myrtle Beach.

Jimenez's plus-plus raw power and potentially plus hit tool are well known in prospect circles, but what's most impressive about his current campaign is the improved approach. After walking 5.4 percent of the time at Low-A, he is now walking 10.4 percent of the time at High-A, while cutting his strikeout rate from 20.3 percent to 19 percent. Jimenez is an elite hitting prospect, and could see a promotion to Double-A shortly after his appearance in this year's Futures Game.
Walk rate improving.

I wasn't concerned there. My concern is him and Schwarber on the corners. That would be scary.

At the end of the day they will end up trading one or the other

So signing day for draft picks is tomorrow. Looking like the first 21 rounds are all gonna sign. Rounds 22, 26, 28, 33, and 35-39 don't appear likely to sign. Darius Vines(27th round), Hunter Ruth(32nd round), and Andrew Karp(34th round) don't have any intel on one way or another. Karp and Ruth in particular would be nice gets if they can swing them.

Normally I don't get too wrapped up in DSL players because they are so far away and it's hard to judge them because of the talent disparity. That being said, Fernando Kelli in the cubs DSL 1 team is intriguing to me. First of all if you're a CF and can hit in this day and age you're immediately on my radar because most CF aren't both good defensively and can hit. Coming into today he was hitting .320/.422/.381 and while he has next to no power(.061 iso) he has stolen 17 bases in 25 games. That doesn't say anything about his arm but given that sort of speed I have to imagine he's got great range. Today he went 4-6 hitting his first home run of the year and stole 3 bases bringing his average to .340 and his stolen base total to 20.

I'm not sure how they handle promotions with regard to DSL vs Mesa. My guess is they just keep players in the DSL all half year since it's not a full season league. But he's someone I'm going to make an effort to keep an eye on. He's also a switch hitter for what it's worth.

July 6, 2017 RHP Adbert Alzolay assigned to Tennessee Smokies from Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

July 4, 2017 RHP Jen-Ho Tseng assigned to Iowa Cubs from Tennessee Smokies.

Called it

So Hedges got demoted to AA again after 0-3 11.94 ERA.
Tseng got the promote to Iowa. They have TBD the next 2 games. Tseng"s last game was 7/3. That puts Sat as his normal rest start. Their rotation should be Brooks, Frankoff, Perez, Kelly, Tseng. Basically a cast off rotation with Tseng. He could end up a option next year now if he holds his own this year.

Adbert Alzolay last pitched 7/2. They have Clifton listed on the 7th and Hedges listed on the 8th. The 7th would be his normal 5 day rest. Not sure if they bump Clifton back or not here.

Jon Heyman ✔ @JonHeyman
Lange gets $1.925M #cubs

Jim Callis ✔ @jimcallisMLB
6th-rder Jeremiah Estrada signs w/@Cubs for $1 mil. Which means 1st-rder Lange signed, or else Cubs would forfeit future 1st-rder. @MLBDraft

Jim Callis ✔ @jimcallisMLB
The @Cubs also finalized a deal with 5th-rder Nelson Velazquez as well. @MLBDraft

No word on Luis Vazquez(14th), Darius Vines(27th), Hunter Ruth(332nd), and Andrew Karp(34th). They could in theory have a tiny bit of money left over if Velazquez signed at or below slot to throw at Ruth/Karp.

*Due to a failed physical (a continuing trend with Baltimore, it seems), the Orioles did not offer their fourth round pick a contract at all. That means it appears that Jack Conlon, a high school pitcher, will become a true free agent. He can sign with anyone, and is not subject to the draft spending caps. In other words, for nothing more than some dollars (probably about a million of them) the Cubs could potentially land a developing power arm with a promising slider.

Maybe. Let's see how he responds to more established hitting first

update from Colorado, but...

Rosscup who the Cubs traded to Rockies earlier this year is getting his AAA call-up to start a game, has been doing well down there. The player Cubs got in return was Matt Carasiti. Rosscup may have been a valuable lefty reliever this year for Cubs but they look to have decided to move a 29 year old minor leaguer for control years.

Zac Rosscup in AAA 2017 has a (12.7 K/9, 2.6 BB/9, 2.60 ERA) line across 17 appearanced. He dominates lefties to .162/.303/.284 slash.

Carisit, 4 years younger, has been his equal. 2.37 ERA with 12.8 K/9 against 3.9 BB/9 across 30 innings of work.

Tseng got the win. Not pretty but better than Hedges fared in his tour. Looks like Kelly got pushed into long relief also. Or it might just be a AAA ASG brake thing and getting him some work in.

Alzolay warming up in Tenn right now. These 2 kids are the best shot for a internal fix to the rotation.
