LinkageThe Chicago Cubs are showing interest in free-agent first baseman Carlos Peña, according to a major league source.
Peña, 32, is coming off a disappointing contract year with the Tampa Bay Rays. He batted only .196 with 28 home runs and 84 RBI in 144 games. He also missed time because of an injured heel.
Hitter-friendly Wrigley Field would be a favorable landing spot for Peña, particularly if he plans to reestablish his value over a short-term deal. (The one-year strategy worked well for Adrian Beltre, a fellow Scott Boras client, at Fenway Park in 2010.)
That Peña bats left-handed is another selling point. The Cubs don’t have an experienced left-handed power hitter on their current roster.
Peña is a former Gold Glove winner, and his defensive ability would be an asset for the Cubs. Chicago infielders had grown accustomed to playing with Derrek Lee, a big target at first and former Gold Glover.
Manager Mike Quade doesn’t have an obvious internal candidate to play first base this year, although it’s possible outfielder Tyler Colvin could handle the position in the long term.
The Cubs also have shown interest in free agent Lance Berkman.
He strikes out way too much for my liking, and I see the Nationals signing him
An out is an out. Period.
Not necessarily. A flyout with a runner at 3rd and less than 2 outs can score a run for example, while a strikeout will not.
But it had been said that they would turn their attention to Pena IF they couldn't get Gonzalez. I wonder if this means they are done trying to get Gonzo.
his BA is alarmingly low, but as the article said, Wrigley would be a favorable place for a guy like Pena to be able to hit some long balls....I can see the interest....but i dont think the cubs will get him...not that i have any objection
Ya, better not to get Gonzo via trade. And for a 1-year deal Pena would be alright. Would make getting Colvin into the lineup once Jackson's up interesting though (yes, I know I say that all the time). And his D would be great, which is what we need if Castro still proves to be very error-prone.
Castro was a 20 year old rookie.... give him time.
As for Colvin, who cares? He is nothing more than a 4th OFer. He can be a really good asset to have off of the bench, especially if he can play 1B.
I'm not too worried about the low OBP. He walks a ton and there is no way he has another season of a BABIP of .222, so his BA will go up.
Trust me, I couldn't be more patient. I meant that if he still is going to make errors as he progresses into the elite defender we all know he can be, it's best to have a great defensive 1B over someone along the lines of Dunn (even without money as a factor).
And I like Colvin, and I think he can be a good everyday player. Regardless, he's a power threat on or off the bench.
TOUCHDOWN!
I'm not sure about Pena. He does have a lot of power and is pretty good at getting on base, but he doesn't usually hit very well, strikes out a lot (which does matter), and is aging.
But I'd take a year of him over three or four of Dunn.
Have you ever heard of a Sacrifice Strikeout CO?
Ya, but they still matter. Obviously a lot are going to be with less than 2 outs if you have that many.
