That's what I figured was happening. Better to get the kids they can get now for the value that they currently have.

Cubs assets:

Matt Garza
Sean Marshall
Geovany Soto
Marlon Byrd
Carlos Marmol

(in no particular order)

If they want to strengthen the farm, no Cubs prospects are actually going to be traded. If any of the above are being fished for trades, they're going to try to get as much back as possible.

I'm not sure Byrd is an asset that would bring anything back in theway of a prospect. I think the other four and maybe Dempster at the trade deadline is.

He's a relatively inexpensive player who plays adequate defense in CF and would be plus in LF/RF. That's the value really. He wouldn't bring back a knock-em-dead prospect package, but he'll get something. Plus trading him opens up spots for Brett Jackson and whoever else surprises out of spring training.

Yeah. We have a bit of depth in the outfield so trading Byrd wouldn't hurt anything.

This does not surprise me at all that the Cubs are going to blow thi stuff up and strip the team down, but I doubt that Jed and Theo would release this for no reason just to tell people how bad we are. I also agree with what is the point of tearing it down and trading young players for Stewart and give DeJesus 10 million dollars.

It would also not surprise me if the Cubs still made a move for Fielder and made him part of the core. It also would not surprise me if this was another play to drive down the price for Fielder.

I have 0 read on this front office.

I think you could see all or majority of those guys gone by the deadline. As theo is just trying to build the cubs assets for the farm and Major league club by getting younger and more talented at all levels.
