He's a relatively inexpensive player who plays adequate defense in CF and would be plus in LF/RF. That's the value really. He wouldn't bring back a knock-em-dead prospect package, but he'll get something. Plus trading him opens up spots for Brett Jackson and whoever else surprises out of spring training.

Huge benefit for the Cubs to move him, but he's a poor man Bobby Abreu and Bobby didn't get a lot of action which is why I don't see Byrd as an asset

Bobby costs more and is older, which means he's basically useful as a DH and no longer OF. So it's a bit different.

Byrd isn't a superstar, but a guy who can play all three OF spots serviceably is useful.

Not Bobby now, check him out after the Yankees.

I think if we want anything in return for Byrd (even if he's included in a bigger deal) we'll have to eat half his salary.

Perhaps, but his salary isn't all that high so eating it I don't think gets you a usable prospect.

Just talked to one of my cousins...big Cincy fan. Said that they can't take on anymore salary and give prospects...but they need a CF and like Byrd.

just fwiw.

Bobby got a 2-year deal worth $19MM after he left the Yankees. His option for $9MM should have vested for 2012. He's a corner outfielder turned DH who can get on base still. He was also 34 (going on 35) when he signed with the Angels. Byrd isn't that good at getting on base but plays a premium position (CF) well enough to stick there and is cheap. There's value to be had even if he sucks compared to Abreu. I don't think you should compare the two though.

It'll just be a build because this team has more holes in it than Roberto Luongo

Theo's really in a good spot...the division's not gonna be great...so 70-75 games is possible while we re-tool the farm.

I think the Brewers, Cards and Reds will still be duking it out up top, but there's a chance the Cubs could sneak in. We'll see. Wouldn't hold your breath for a division title or wild card though

whether or not this is a full rebuild depends on the fielder situation

ya know, we are still in the running...

btw i still hate the idea of trading garza...even if he is one of, if not our best, trading asset

Only now because they added a 2nd wild card team.

If we are going to do this we need to get top level prospects in a couple of positions namely,

1B, with offensive upside.
RHP
3B

We have Stewart for now, and then there's Vitters lurking in the depths...

Which would be a bunch of guys with serious questions. The Cubs really don't have a legitimate heir at 3B, but Stewart will be interesting to watch this season since he has always done well for his age in the minors. Waiting for that to translate where it counts though.

Until Vitters shows he can play 3B at an above .900 fielding percentage I wouldn't worry about his future at the hot corner.

no we are not trust me.

everyone outside of Castro will be moved if the right deal comes along.

I have been advocating this for a few years and glad it is happening we need to retool the whole system to win a WS. We have no talent so it may take 5 years but IMO it is worth it in the long run.

We can speculate and make all the moves in the world but in the end, I still don't see a direction for this team. Outside of Castro, Jackson and MAYBE Stewart and Barney, what building blocks does this team have internally?

I'm going to be so angry if we trade Garza after we gave up so much to get him. I'd rather ride the year out with him and pick up compensation as a Type A or B free agent as opposed to getting way less than market value on him. Unless a team absolutely blew us away with an offer, I'd rather just hold onto him and get that sure-fire top selection.

Hopefully we don't trade away our assets simply for quantity. I'd love to see us land corner infielders and some high-ceiling pitching prospects. Has anyone heard if the Angels are still interested in Marmol and Soto? I wouldn't mind getting a guy like Bourjus back in return. I think he would be a great addition at the top of our lineup. Maybe Trumbo, too. Besides.... he (Bourjos) grew up next to my aunt and uncle in Park Ridge, it'd be cool to see him in a Cubs uni.

You can't get compensation for Garza as he's still under team control until after 2013. Also, the new CBA kills Type A and Type B compensation. You're asking the Cubs to keep Garza while he makes likely $8MM-10MM this coming season and even more the next with arbitration when they don't seem to be in any position to contend. If that's the case you might as well let someone else pay that money and develop the prospects you get in return.

Trading assets under the Theo regime appears to bring back something of value, for now. You don't make trades just to do it, they have to benefit both teams.

I'd definitely trade for the right price, though.
