You do not necessarily need your front office/statistics guys to have ever played baseball, but they probably watched a lot of games while poring over spreadsheets and crap.

i agree with this...

However, you actually want your on-field staff to have some experience in playing the game, even if they were just career minor leaguers or benchwarmers. That garners respect from the players, and the years of playing also allow them to teach mechanics, strategies, and other things that a couch potato could not.

agreed with this as well..i think you can still be a good manager without mlb experience..but you still have to have extensive knowledge of the game...and having mlb experience is certainly an advantage

I agree with this, but again we have seen countless examples of the best teachers of the game are the ones that weren't able to execute at the big league level themselves. So I wouldn't say it is a requirement, but it is a benefit because these are human beings we are talking about.

right, playing in the majors isnt a requirement but a benefit

i think in the bold you confused performance with experience...

you can have alot of knowledge and experience in the majors yet not do well due to a number of variables, including a limited skill set

The main objection that proponents of advanced analysis have is when experienced managers continue to use strategies like the bunt, hit-and-run and IBB in situations that are sub-optimal. There are places for those strategies, but I think what a good manager should do is call upon his experience and then draw upon the knowledge of the eggheads in the front office to optimize his usage of those strategies.

That's something we hope Dale Sveum will do.

Like, a designated dugout egghead with one of those unbreakable IBM laptops (in case of foul balls or Carlos Zambrano eruption) could conceivably sit in the dugout and suggest strategies for Sveum that he could decide to use or not depending on how he feels. But at least he has options.

The MoneyBart episode may have been fictional, but it's not a terrible idea:

Not cool. Trade all of our good players for junk. How is this in any way going to help in the future? I am not understanding this at all.

As long as they don't trade Castro, I'm all in favor of this

Because Sean Marshall was going to resign for less than market value after this season?

Nice. He's pretty much right though, Marmol has literally no trade value until midseason if he doesn't suck it up. Any trade now is likely to be a salary dump unless they find a desperate GM.

Hopefully Dale doesnt over use him IMO that has been his issue. If we didnt over use him he would be fine. He has pitched way to many innings over the past few years.
