The Cubs sign Braden Looper to a minor league deal with a non-roster invitation to spring training.

Also the Cubs sign IF Augie Ojeda to a minor league deal with a non-roster invitation to spring training.

Nothing big on either but there not a hurt signing.

WTF? If Looper takes Cash's rotation spot I'll kill him. Same for Wellemeyer.

Ojeda, OK. Some competition for Barney.

Great? Hell No! Guy hasn't pitched since 09, how is it great? It has no risk, but the chance of it being great are very slim.

It gives us depth and its low risk high reward. why not great? were not risking shit. and if he beats out cashner for the starting spot then it is an even better move.
If cash doesn't start this year, he never will.
You need to hop off his dick. He has all the time in the world to start. his second year is not a make or break year so chill the hell out.

Low Risk, Low Upside.

It isn't "Great" unless Looper does something, which he probably won't. Is every league for minor league depth great to you?

nope but a vet pitcher can help out. Is every pitcher we bring in going to get the same comments on Cashner from you? I can play the question game too.

I feel that Cashner is best fit as a starter, and want to get that chance. If he stays in the pen this year, the Cubs will just continue his development as a reliever. I at least want Cashner to get that chance to start.

I wasn't serious anyway, considering Looper won't even make the team.

Right, because you signed Carlos Pena and Traded for matt garza and picked up a bunch of FA's that no one wanted. ok.

it isnt the quanitiy of moves, it is the quality. period.

He's a former closer so he'll probably compete for a bullpen spot as well as a spot in the rotation

He has had success as a RP. He has a career 3.38era as a RP in the MLB. Like USC said, if he makes the team it will be as a RP and Cash's spot is still secure.

I never said that he'd be making the team as an RP. He'll likely compete for the 5th spot in the rotation and if he wins Cashner will likely end up in AAA as the 6th/emergency starter

Yeah I know but I'm just sayin' his better times has come as a RP. Also, Cash is lined up as the 4th starter. I guess you can just add another name to the list of who will compete for the 5th starters job.

Didn't Looper used to be a closer? IIRC wasn't he the Mets' and Cards' closer?
