cubs are trying to contend in 2014-15, so why get all pissy over a signing now?

does it really matter when they arent going to be ready until 2014/2015.

Sounds like someone is receiving dinner invitations to the Epstein Mansion or information delivered via alien spacecraft.
I haven't read this anywhere from a credible source.

Must be nice to be on the "cutting edge".
I guess people like you just know more by making up stuff.

GOT IT !!!

Are we talking about Gavin Floyd now? Cubs take Floyd with a three year 32 million extension for a prospect.

Edwin Jackson and Gavin Floyd are the same type of pitcher.

That's essentially true, but a cursory glance and personal experience tells me that Edwin Jackson is more durable, so that does matter some.

Good signing. It's been a pretty nice offseason. No big moves, but the front office has done well to put together a team that can win some games. This organization and team are headed in the right direction.

They've said that for the past 104+ years.

So when do we praise a front office for bad starting pitcher signings (baker, feldman, Jackson) and scheirholtz? you say win some games....maybe they wont lose 100 but they will still be under .500

Right direction? no one knows if its the right direction until the draftees come up and the so called top specs become big leaguers who can actually play. I wouldnt call their offseason "going in the right direction"

edwin jackson blows and got 52 mil and wont be a factor when they are ready

baker and feldman will either be good enough to flip for a spec or two or be DFAd.

The term "going in the right direction" does not imply any form of guarantee, but rather continuing to make moves that fit the organizational philosophy that has been adopted and has been agreed to by most semi-intelligent Cubs fans. Meanwhile, we do have the d3a's of the world who are simply completely dumbasses, but we'll save that for another day.

And again the focus is solely on the major league team when the statement was the direction of the organization. How about acknowledgement of the importance of OBP which is something new from this organization? Or the increase in scouting and technology that the Cubs were laughable behind all of baseball prior to this regime change? The capital investments in training facilities for Cubs minor leaguers?

All of these things do not guarantee success but offer a direction that the team is headed, and looking at the successful teams in baseball this past year in work like Rubio did shows that this is the track followed by other successful clubs.

Which would be an improvement over last year. Nobody is expecting the signings to win a World Series.

Why wouldn't it be a step in the right direction? All of the contracts signed were manageable and at or below-market value dur to the current landscape. On top of that, they were able to acquire some prospects and obtain players who can be utilized to expand on minor league depth. We could always rag on the White Sox giving Jake Peavy an extension when he hadn't pitched a full season since 2008. The contract would look like a steal, but if his arm falls off again, couldn't we all say it was a terrible signing? Everything is good or bad if the context is shifted.

I've already posted it twice in this thread -- $10 to $13 million annually is the going rate for an innings eater with a good bill of health. If he wins us 13 games and keeps his ERA around 4, I'd be more than happy with that. He'll be making $11 million each season after his signing bonus. That's certainly not the worst thing in the world.

baker and feldman will either be good enough to flip for a spec or two or be DFAd.

That was the plan the entire time anyway. If they pitch well, they won't be around come the trade deadline. Some contender will be starved for pitching and look to add depth on the cheap.
