Every year some fans say a team overpaid, but salaries only go up. And up. And up.

Lester was "overpaid" a year ago to many, and is now $6 million less than Price, and will be $10 million less than Greinke. Not that he is quite at that level, but $10 million is a lot.

Without a doubt. I don't know the details or specifics but I wouldn't be shocked if Price has an option in this deal. As matter of fact I'd be shocked if he doesn't have an option after the first three or four seasons of his deal. If he does that could be blessing on a long term deal like this. If Price were still pitching very well at after the third year of his deal & has an opt out, it may not be a horrible idea to let him walk at that point where he would be 33 years old, along with the Sox having some young pitchers that are in the fold & up & coming.

I missed Lester in Boston, I never wanted him to go. He may not have been an every 5 day stud, but he was money for the Sox in the postseason.

Price can opt out after 3 years, which i think would be dumb on his part unless he pitching insanely great or just wants out of Boston ...

At 33, not sure if a team will be insane enough to give him more then 4 yrs and greater then 31 per

Sabathia did so & he was a prime candidate for a fat mans decline. Again as I mentioned earlier, even if the Price deal ends up being a flop, I still like the Sox young players & pitchers that they didn't have to part ways with to acquire a front line starter. The Sox young pitchers & players really to started to come into their own last season after the All Star break. The original point I was trying to make is that I personally I do not believe the Sox success will have to hinge on a one long term FA signing. Price or no Price I believe the Sox are a young team on the up & up.

unless he pitching insanely great or just wants out of Boston ...

Neither would shock me. As much as I love the Sox they have a long well known rep for a bad habit of parting ways with good players under created negative circumstances by the organization & their stooges in the media. Not to mention Boston is one of those cities that an athlete will either love or hate when it comes to attention. Out of the Bruins, Celtics, Pats, & Sox, the Red Sox are & always have been that cities darling over all of their other franchises. So the fans & media tend to be very obsessive in a smaller city in general area that doesn't offer a lot of privacy to it's better known citizens

The Cubs offer to David Price was for 7 years and $161M (AAV of $23M) Tweets Bruce Levine. That was the third highest offer for Price, well behind the $190M offer from the Cardinals and far shy of the $217M deal he signed with Boston.

Hard to call 7/161 not much of an offer but....not much of an offer

Nobody was touching Boston's numbers though clearly and I bet they would've gone higher if someone did

Thank God Boston got him. Could you imagine the outrage if the Cubs finished 2nd to the Cards.

Wondering now if they were willing to go to 23 mil with him and gave up 16 per to Lackey, does that mean they have an extra 7 mil plus whatever extra they held back on from the 23 to spend now. . Which could be why were hearing about them considering a front line closer now. .

I doubt they are going to spend for a closer via free agency. It will probably come via trade. They may have to use funds for a CF'er. which to me, is more of a pressing issue than replacing Hector Rondon.

No.. I dont think there a closer to be had via FA

My point was they have extra cash now to be able to add via trade a closer who has a somewhat high salary now..

I wanted Chapman cause I thought he still had 2 more yrs of control. . He a FA after this coming season

Not a smart move to trade good prospects for 1 year of a player ... then he most likely will test the market cause im sure he will find a team to pay him a crazy amount to close.
