I would be on the side of getting him earlier than later, even if you have to trade some potential talent away.

He is a FA after this season. The earliest the Cubs could possibly get him is at the deadline but its unlikely unless Detroit bombs.

I get the feeling they'll shop him if they manage to sign Scherzer but they're not going to be desperate to do it. They weren't all that afraid of letting Scherrzer walk so I doubt they'll worry about it with Price if he can help them win which means that they're going to ask for a ton for him and I just don't see the Cubs meeting that kind of price (no pun intended). If the Cubs are in at the deadline they might trade for a guy that no one has even mentioned. Peter Gammons Tweet the other day that the Cubs aren't likely to ever have two $20 million plus pitchers on the roster has me thinking they're going to get creative in who they trade with. Then again Gammons could be wrong.

In todays market, I cant see how they couldnt have two over 20 million dollar guys in the rotation. Look at the contracts. The Cubs dont have the pitching prospects. I think Gammons is way off on that.
