Earlier today we hard the Yanks have watched Dempster and have interest in nim but according to a source close to Hendry, Demp is going no where. Per Stark.

So, the Cubs have to be 100% posstive Dempster will pick up his 14MM PO to stay with the Club. So they don't lose his for nothing.

This is kinda disturbing because Dempster stats are decreasing and 14MM is still a lot to invest. If you can get most of that off the books and still get a good offer, you have to do it. But if there is no good offer out there, then don't trade him. He at least has to be on the block and see what the Cubs can get for him, right?

Thoughts?

There are a couple issues...

1) His age and the likelihood of getting a better contract. My guess is that he won't, which means that whoever they trade him to (if at all) must pick up that option because I doubt he would waive that AND his NTC.

2) The fact that he's invested in the community. His daughter has a genetic disorder and Chicago area hospitals provide the care he needs for her. He's earned the NTC and would probably just stick around anyway. And he'd still pick up the option as stated in point #1.

So they might try to trade him next season and hope he has better overall statistics, but Dempster's issue isn't that he sucks...he's just had some mechanical issues and bad luck, as have all Cubs' starters this year. You should just assume he sticks around and picks up his option until you hear otherwise from an official source about an official trade that actually happened :D

Guess we can't rebuild if Hendry doesn't want to trade people and the others will refuse trades...

At the very least it does not appear the rebuild will be possible until Z and Demp's contracts expire. Those are the two mega-big ones that expire the soonest. Assume that we'll have Soriano for at least another 2 years before they are more willing to release him.

JH was never gona rebuild, even how much Cub fans want too.

Part of that is because he's in "save my ass" mode. If the Ricketts aren't going to fire him, at least have the intelligence to let him know that it's okay to rebuild.

I believe Hendry has same feelings as i do. Cubs SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO REBUILD. They are a big market team and i even read a quote where he said Cubs are big market and should act like it

Yeah I mean honestly he has no reason to. If he did he wouldn't be around to reap the fruits of his labor.

except for the fact that the vets on this team suck. so yeah **** rebuilding, just tire patch around horrible aging vets...sounds like a contender to me.

Except that if they don't rebuild, it's going to be really really expensive to field a team that's going to contend.

Again, part of waiting 2-4 yrs. to rebuild is what's frustrating.

you have to rebuild. you kinda have no choice in this. the vets on this team blow....its not like there is a core on this team that can be built around and be contenders.

I agree. The Cubs dug themselves a hole with the bloated contracts to the likes of Zambrano, Soriano(greatest LFer in baseball ) and Fukudome, etc.

Rebuilding is the only viable option for them to contend at this point.

Again noboday thought they woudl contend after 2006 season but with 4-5 good moves they did.....They have alot of money off books this winter and they spend the money in right place they could contend next year. Im sorry but to me Cubs should never have to go in full rebuild mode.

The Cubs haven't been in full rebuild mode for the past century. Do you see a problem here?

Sounds harsh. But this is a business. We aren't paying him to worry about his feelings. We are paying him to pitch...

I like Dempster. But the way he's pitching, he's not worth half what we are paying him. His daughter's predisposition, while tragic, doesn't make him untouchable...He's far from it. Just another reason Jim Hendry has got to go. Offering an old pitcher a lot of money, a player option and a NTC when he's never pitched well enough to deserve a NTC. GMs give those things out like candy nowadays.

I agree with daddies3angels. The Cubs should never have to say "we have no intention of competing over the next 3 years". They'd be the only team with their type of resources to throw in the towel for a few years.

they dont have to say it, it is in their actions.
