It's really not outdated at all. Alot of teams have gone back to running the 4-3 TAMPA 2 or the 4-2-5 with alot of 2 deep variants.

That defense wasnt the problem and yet would have been a lot more effective if they had the right personnel at the DT positions.

At this point I'm convinced that Billings is better suited as a Hybrid SHADE/NT and Dexter should be a 3-4 DE. Neither one are that true 1GAP quick twitch/burst DT that blow up the interior.

This is exactly why it is borderline idiotic to primarily draft players based on all in one athletic score.

Put a true 3 Technique instead of a long and lungy 3-4DE in the middle of this very defense and you will see a significant difference for the better. The difference will be night and day

Eh not sure I fully agree. Dexter had top 2 DT pressure stats while Billings was playing. It dropped off after Billings went down, but they played well off each other. Bears had no big 1 tech guy to replace Billings that was worth anything once he went down. The issue cascaded across the line.

Allen doesn’t get a say on who the STC is I’d imagine. His defensive assistants for sure let him hire who he wants.
Yeah i kinda figured you would of understand that that was what i was talking about.

Courtney Cronin thinks Fraley, Dennis Allen and Rizzi are all still in play.

Twitter has been a bit all over the place on Fraley and Rizzi lately

I mean, other than Schefter, Allbright, and one other whose name escapes me right now, the rest of the credentialed press said we wouldn't be getting Ben Johnson.

They have no idea.

Hoping to get an update on Dennis Allen today. I know it took the Patriots like a week or so before they finally nailed down McDaniels, but it'd be nice to get some clarity on the situation sooner rather than later now with everybody looking to fill out their staff. Allen, in my opinion, is absolutely critical for the Bears to hire. He's one of the few (perhaps only?) A-tier DC's left with head coaching experience. The drop off is pretty significant after Allen now that Saleh looks to be going to SF. Let's get this one out of the way, please.

They have to run a full search and be Rooney compliant weather they know Allen is the guy or not. I doubt we find out for a few days

Is there a timeline when we can expect the DC/OC hires?

Nobody knows that. Could be today, could be two weeks. I’ll tell you for sure it will be before week 1.

They’re interviewing two passing game coordinators from the rams and Vikings. Both are minorities. Such a dumb , rule but I get it. I do think it’s going to be Allen.

Edit: what I mean by that is it’s more offensive to be used to satisfy that requirement. This day and age it should be best man gets the job.

I mean does the OC role here really matter anymore with Johnson calling plays?

Yes they have to lead the staff and meetings plus set the foundation for the game plan. Johnson will then review it and tweak it usually on Friday. Calling plays is the art, you still need your worker bees.

Kind of? Ben needs a quality person to help him out... but at the end of the day, the offense isn't going to fail because of the OC. However, a guy who is terrible at giving Ben enough help will mean that Ben loses the ability to focus on the entire team, which means team problems. Good thing is I think there are plenty of guys who can fill the need for this specific role.
