No they did not play the same role offensively and defensively. Wilt played the high post and the ball went through him a lot offensively. He was one of the first big men to play that style in the offense. He was not a non factor. Comparing Wilt offensively to Rodman at ANY time in Wilt's career is unconscionable.
Those Lakers teams didn't start winning until Wilt showed up...the Bulls continued where they left off once Jordan came back in actual basketball shape. And again, how are you going to put Rodman in and not put in Horace Grant? His role on those first championship teams was even more crucial, there was no other power forwards his size running a full court press defensively. Artis Gillmore had a better career as a Bull, so did Norm Van Lier in my opinion. Just because a guy was a great rebounder for three years, and "set trends" by getting tatoos and wearing a dress, that does not justify retiring his number.
Kukoc would have to get his number retired also. That is way too much. And it dilutes the honor. Dennis Rodman has his name on the banners. And I suggested that they have a night for him commemorating his induction into the HOF. But by no means should they retire his number and leave others who have done as much if not more for the organization out in the cold. Reinsdorf is very picky about who he gives that honor to when it comes to the Bulls. And I for one am glad that he is.
