Yeah, more funding would be great. If I recall correctly, a modern cellphone has more computing than the entire lunar lander... thats so sad lol. But is it just me or does the overall opinion/enthusiasm to explore space seem to have falter? It just dont seem like it has that same energy it did when I was growing up.

it doesnt, and thats the problem. people dont get pissed when D.C. cuts funding in favor of increasing spending on fucking failed drug war or some shit.

War on Drugs was indeed a complete joke. Turn to any channel and your hit with at least 4 commericals telling you to take a drug that often causes the same symptoms you already have or additional side effects that are worse than the original problem. I rather start smoking weed than trust any of those damn pills.

question for all of you. Whether you believe that there is intelligent life or not, what do you think would happen to the world, our society if the government ever officially announces contact has been made with another intelligent life? what would happen to our religions? economy? value of money? would people leave there jobs? Ive always been curious of the human races reaction to something like this if it were to happen.

Pre 90's? Chaos. More chaos if we go back further when, in this Country for example, Religion was very strong, and views were more narrow. Todays World? Not so much, though obviously many would still freak out. The images, stories, etc is more widely known and accepted whether one believes or a skeptic. The single best evidence to pre 90s of chaos is obviously H.G. Wells radio enactment of his novel War of the Worlds. Tho that was reporting we were under attack, but the fear of Martians attacking was there.

Although it would also have to be taken into account what the Goverment announces. If its just communication response, more interest than chaos. If its say, confirming an event as Roswell, that would spark even further interest. If its theyre landing in NY at Noon tomorrow... Well Im picturing Independence Day. People gathering and people fleeing. If theyre landing and have been working with the Goverment all these years, still fear, but easier for more to accept. Fears are the unknown aspects/intentions.

depends on what the life forms are and what their intentions are, among other things

The existence of extraterrestrials does not disprove religion in any way at all.

Thankfully not with modern day Religion. Now that theyre more publically approving of exploration and working with the scientific community. But then again, isnt it Creationists, or a separate sect of them, say the Earth is but 4 to 6k years old? And we lived with the Dinosaurs? Those people would lose their fucking minds. Thankfully, not all Religion is conceded to new ideologies these days. I dont see Religion, aside a few nut jobs, being an issue... Unless ET proves evolution 100% or whatnot.

Im saying "contact" not in the way that independance day is. Im saying a very general statement by our pres stating that we have made contact. If that were to happen im sure he wouldnt say much more than that. If a media rep asked if we are in danger we would get a no comment im sure. So my question was very basic.

Now if we were to make contact with good or bad im sure the reactions would be extremley different from one another.

religion and ETs can coexist. it may change a few things in the stories of specific religions but one can still believe in god, as in god created all of this including civilizations out of this world.

IMHO I dont even know if this world can handle some news like this if were to happen.

keep focusing on kepler, maybe will get an idea out there

not much to disagree with here... imo general contact would probably spark some kind of interest towards further contact and trying to make use of that contact..if you get what i'm saying

i dont think general contact initiates any fear or anything groundbreaking in terms of how it affects us..but it would definitely be a catalyst for a return to heightened space interest...like the space race in the 60s multiplied

agreed.

I still think a casual statement that we made contact would put some people in fear. for me i would find it fascinating, and the thought of the contact being bad ETS would cross my mind but freaking out and having a knee jerk reaction would be foolish, this is not in my control.

everyone talks about the greys and other different looking aliens etc etc, imho it would be sweet to see it be another human race 10000000 years more advanced, see if they have competitve sports and shit.
