Assumption: The Cubs are either planning on two things

1. Immediately trading Jorge Soler
or
2. Kyle Schwarber is their mostly full-time C

I cannot imagine Dexter Fowler came to Chicago to be a fourth OF.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Illinois Fighting Illini
Didn't Fowler sign for 3 years with Baltimore for $35 mil? What the heck happened?

The contract

8 mil base with a 5 mil buyout on a 9 mil option for next season for Fowler.

HAHAHAHAHA.

So very strange. There has to be a deal for pitching including Soler coming right? I assumed Coghlan going meant Austin Jackson.

Boom! I have said before I thought they were trying to angle for Fowler but things would have to fall perfectly in place.

Somehow, someway they did.

That was.... weird but hey props to the cubs for getting that done. I was obviously way into the Jackson camp but it was more I just wanted another CF on the roster. This accomplishes that.

It's very strange that Kyle has been catching all week. Maybe they feel confident he can C? can you imagine that lineup?

Zobrist - 2B
Heyward - RF
Rizzo - 1B
Bryant - 3B
Schwarber - C
Soler - LF
Fowler - CF
P
Russell - SS

I mean that's the only other explanation right? Either Soler goes or Schwarber is behind the plate more often than not. Again, very strange.

Lets not get it twisted. They are also trying to cover themselves in case the rookies regress. I think that is a major factor into how deep they are getting.

no....

but its great depth, a lead-off hitter, perfect guy to pinch hit for P and get on base, perfect to keep Hayward happy, or give option of Soler trade. I think they want to keep this group together.

You can go 3 outfielders and pinch hit Schwarber.

I hope they don't trade Soler, they just want insurance of having a high OBP guy to go to during hard stretches of the season. Let guys compete for playing time.

I wonder if Montero is on the block now, if Schwarber is going to be catching there is no need for 3 guys behind the plate. Unless Ross goes, but I don't see that happening.

Montero or Soler is probably on the way out, no?

So Fowler thought his best bet at a rebound contract year was to come to Chicago and not start? I get he wants to win and be here but the Angels or someone else wouldn't have done a one year deal for him?

This isn;t really a Theo thing as much as it is a Fowler thing. He valued winning more than money. Hats off to him

He could have took the QF offer. He lost out on roughly 7 million this year. To say its a Fowler thing is nonsense, it takes a two way street to strike a deal. The Cubs basically got him for 2 years for his QF offer if they want him.

No way they trade Montero, they would probably have to eat some of the contract and he is the one who works the most with Schwarber.

I don't think Fowler will be the #4, he will be the starting CF, allowing Heyward to play in RF

I don't know how LF is going to play out or catcher because Soler, Montero, and Schwarber can't all play

Jon Heyman is reporting that Fowler wanted an opt out after year 1 with the Orioles. They would not do it. Now, he is a Cub
