I said a during the season that Fowler was worth about 8 million per year but he would get 10-11. Seems like the Cubs and the league valued him at the exact same spot I did.

I almost always am ~2 mil short per year on what players get.

He could have took the QF offer. He lost out on roughly 7 million this year. To say its a Fowler thing is nonsense, it takes a two way street to strike a deal. The Cubs basically got him for 2 years for his QF offer if they want him.

To think it's not only makes sense for the reason you gave. He could have had a lot more on a one year deal but thought he was in demand by competitive teams. When that was not going to happen he told his agent to call the Cubs and see what they would do. This is basically a lot like the Andre Dawson deal. I'm sure Theo said, we'd take him on this thinking there is no way Fowler is coming and boom, he jumped at it. Much applause to Fowler for wanting to win over taking the cash.

He basically signed with the Orioles for 3 years 33 million. He wanted an opt out clause after year 1 and they declined. He chose to go elsewhere.

No way they trade Montero, they would probably have to eat some of the contract and he is the one who works the most with Schwarber.
I did crack a joke with a nostradamus comment regarding Ross mysteriously finding his way to the long-term DL, but that would free some things up.

This isn;t really a Theo thing as much as it is a Fowler thing. He valued winning more than money. Hats off to him

Yes and no. From what I'm reading he wanted a shorter deal to hit FA again. So, chances are this is really just a one year deal and he hits FA again in a class that's much weaker. But obviously the cubs and the juggernaut of a line up they've built is a pretty soft landing spot.

So his value to the Cubs was where I said it was and his value to the league was where I said it was.

I want to see what follows this before I get too excited. They have a lot of bats. What is this going to do to Baez? Will he even make the team? NOT a MLB CBA guy, but I think they can leave him in the minors all season if they need too.

They can probably play all 4 OF 3 plus times a week if Kyle catches a but and you rotate everyone. I want to see this plays out. I can a move like this backfiring long or short term.

Just to throw this out here....

The cubs could in theory send Schwarber to AAA to get him split time duty catching with Contreras a la their AA time. It wouldn't be popular with fans for obvious reasons but I think you'd get buy in from Schwarber's camp because he genuinely seems to want to catch. AAA still has the DH so both still hit every day but if you're really on board with him being a C this seems like the best case to get him ready fast.

I obviously get why people would be suspect of the idea. But the thing is, their offense with Fowler being added is still really fricken good. So, it becomes more a question of do you believe in him as a C. Additionally, he makes for good insurance if Soler gets hurt/is ineffective and you give both every day playing time this way.

If there isn't another deal forthcoming you're going to see a lot of OF looks. Heyward is is going to play the bulk of his time in RF which leaves some interesting situations. Does Soler maybe play 1 or 2 games a week in RF and 2 if LF with Schwarber catching a little bit more that we had thought? It's fascinating. The one thing that doesn't make sense to me is why Fowler would come here on essentially a pillow contract if he's not going to play everyday and if he is how are you maximizing what Soler and Schwarber bring to the club. That's the part I can't figure out.

Baez makes the team simply because he is the only back up SS and has superior defense and flexibility to LaStella. Also, his bat still has an unlimited ceiling. Baez would have to get hurt or completely mess up his adjustments for the Cubs to send him down.

Sure, Theo thanks you for your contributions to setting the market.

I did not set it. I accurately predicted it. I guess you would not know anything about accurately predicted anything.

That's hard to see happening. Schwarber's bat is big league. Tough to send that down.

Can the Cubs option La Stella to AAA? Not a MLB CBA guy so any help would be appreciated.

I would think they would send down whoever has options since PT is going to limited. Also Baez would probably be better off getting at bats every day.

Like I said, I want to see how this plays out. I am not in love this move yet.
