Id love to get a very large, thick German Shepherd..I had 1 living in Chicago and he was the best..Cancer got him though, The problem with getting a puppy though is ya never know how they will turn out. Its a science picking out puppies. Like the NFL draft I guess

A good breeder has the "eye" when evaluating puppies. We communicated with our breeder about our family and our desires regarding a dog and she picked the puppy for us. Hell, I never saw any of the other pups except for pics she had online.

We couldn't be more happy with the dog she has become.

A good reputable breeder is worth paying more money for various reasons. Check their references and if you dont feel like you have been at least slightly interrogated by the breeder then find walk away and find another.

Beagles are so cool. If I hadnt found a border collie breeder that breeds for temperament (actually very rare) then beagle was our second choice.

It would be very hard for me to get any other type of dog now...they are great with kids (I don't have any, but I have a niece and nephews), pretty low maintenance and healthy, a drawback is they have to be on a leash if not in a fenced area but that is because when they are tracking something they will not listen. I have a relatively big fenced in back yard with a doggie door, so when I have late nights at work I don't worry about them because they take care of their business on their own. One thing about them which can be frustrating and hilarious all at the same time is they are skilled thieves. My older one has been known to steal food from right under your nose.

There used to be a time when I would've taken a dog over a cat any day of the week, but after 10 years of dealing with dirty diapers and barf, I'm done with potty training and things that make big stinky messes. Cats are pretty much plug and play, cheaper to feed, and you can leave them for a long weekend.

yeah man, my beagle would literally eat any human food he could find. We fed him well enough, but he's just a dog, so he eats everything he can. We had to start putting the garbage can on the basement stairs because he would just knock it over and eat everything. I've walked in countless times after work or from just being out and came home to the kitchen just full of garbage. He would sit by our feet at dinner and whine until we fed him sometimes too. I'd always sneak him some of my food ;)

They're smart too. My dad once caught him trying to get into the front room. We used to have a side of a crib we used for a door to block him from going in there when we went out because this is when he was littler and he would destroy pillows/chew on furniture/etc. So my dad spied on him and watched him push his kennel next to the "gate" blocking the front room, then pushed a chair next to the kennel, jumped on the chair, then onto the kennel, then over the "gate" leading into the front room. I put gate in parentheses cause we used it as a gate but really was just a piece of wood from a crib.

When they get out though, you're right, it's hard to get them to come back to you. He's escaped a few times and once he got hit by a car on Kedzie by my house. The guy who hit him took off, (jagoff, as if any punishment would have came his way), and he ended up having a punctured lung and a few broken ribs. But the vet said he was really healthy and strong, so he pulled through. He was only like 3 at the time so the youth helped out too.

Damn now I miss him haha

I worked at Palos Animal Hospital as a vet assistant for about 4 months last year. So I got to see a bunch of cool dogs. We got 3 Afghan hounds once, those things are cool. Majestic in the way they run and walk. These were show dogs so of course we had to pamper them, but their hair is so long that when they piss, the get it all over their fur, it's pretty gross.

After working there, I fucking hate tiny dogs like chihuahuas. They are the devil. They never shut up and they bite the **** out of you. Poodles too, those bastards.

My first one died from cancer as well. You should get another one. GSDs are awesome.

If you guys get a chance take a look at USA tonight to see the dog show. Best of show will have the Bloodhound from my friends line. I'm going to have one next summer. He tried to get me to take one today but I don't want a puppy until summer.
