after all of this explanation i wonder if the food is any good...

I've never visited Hawaii and I've heard nothing but great things about the tropical paradise that it is, and I really do like most Japanese food, but Brown Gravy? Spam?

WAT

Spam became a traditional food in Hawaii back when so much was sent over ship, therefore SPAM was a staple food. It kind of stuck and Hawaiians have made it into a comfort food. But yes, I wouldn't suggest going to a Hawaiian place and ordering anything with spam. It's redundant for tourists. Like going to an exotic country, but only eating McDonalds at the airport.

Loco Moco is easy to make at home. It's just a hamburger(or more of a salisbury hamburger/steak) patty on a hill of rice, with its own gravy and an egg over easy on top. It too is nothing all that exotic, but surprisingly tasty.

As for post-tribal Hawaiian food. It's all asian-fusion. And because there is a ton of competition there for Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Samoan, Filipino, and US mainland styles, the foods themselves have a take of their own. Think of any dish that you like getting from a Chinese place here, get the same dish in Hawaii, it's similar in the basic ingredients, but wildly different in taste, prep and texture. In a good way too, because of that competition. I don't miss the island fever and living in a 40x40mile trap in the middle of the ocean. I miss the food like crazy though.
This Aloha Eats place, while still not the real deal, is actually amazingly good with all things considered.

And don't get me started on the fresh fish. Even going to Red Lobster in Hawaii is 100x better than the best Seafood restaurant in Chicago. You wont get that at Aloha Eats LOL. So maybe when your friends tell you about the food, the fish has to be included. It melts in your mouth and you don't have to drown it with any sauce.

I tried going to a Brazilian steakhouse for lunch once but didn't feel like I had enough time to get my money's worth

food trucks here are more heavily scrutinized by the health department, easier to clean and maintain and probably cleaner than most restaurants you'd visit in the city.

HHM is right...This isnt the old days. Although I wouldnt say a health inspector is beyond a bribe for a transgression or two as he would be for a restaurant..

I know, but nothing beats the one downtown for me. I know it isn't the original one, but any of the other ones I've been to don't taste as good.

The one under michigan that's been there since 1964. My dad took me there when I was a kid so it also has some nostalgic value.l

And, well, I don't like the sweaters you wear!
