brett or Monk.... you can only save one.... who do you pick.... see now it got tough

I would try both. Going by some of Brett's remarks in the past about his weight, Monk might be easier, but I wouldn't want to leave anyone behind, human or animal.

I would go to save Monk and we would both end up dying trolling eachother....

Depends on the human and depends on the pet, and depends on the situation. I am a human after all, and subject to everything I mentioned about human beings. But I like to think I can step back and look at the bigger picture and recognize the 'flaws' in my being.

Next, are you going to ask me if I'd kill one to save a million?

You said general equality. IN that context who do you save? The answer 100/100 times needs to be the human.

Ares,
Thanks for quoting bearmick.

I'm overweight of my own doing. 230 pounds for a 5'11" guy that is in shape as long as circle is a shape.

No, it doesn't. We could think of dozens of scenarios where that's not the case. Just read through this thread with the mention of bad humans not worth saving.

1) you setup an equality example
2) Anyone that picks an animal over a human has the real issue. There's just something off there.

Save an extremely cute animal or Hitler.

go.

Appealing to empathy isn't going to work with Brett. His sole reasoning for thinking that the worst human should be helped over the best animal is because animals can't become born again Christians. He doesn't believe animals have a soul, and therefore they're objectively less important.

For those of us who live in the real world, life is life. Some of it is more intellectually complex than others, but that doesn't make it more worthy of love or compassion than less advanced beings. Sentience is of obvious practical importance when judging which should be helped in hypothetical situations.

Bottom line - a living creature with a frontal cortex is important, worthy of compassion and love, and worth saving from a fire.

So much crazy here. How do you know animals don't have a soul? Why is someone who has killed others (1-millions) worthy of being saved? Who is keeping score in this fucking soul game? As if we have the mental capacity to understand a "God" if there were one.

****.....

Well this is a God sized can of worms. I wish the elephant the best and thank those who participated in the rescue.

I just watched a video of a Maltese being rescued 1 hour before being put down for being too aggressive. I've never seen an aggressive Maltese. The dog was so scared of the guy trying to rescue him that he pooped all over the place and was biting and snapping at everything. But once he was in the guys lap he just laid there and wagged his tail. Now I need a tissue.
