Nope, they all look like they are concentrated out west primarily. Will do some investigation locally though. Never know.

It may be difficult to find some really fresh stuff in Orlando. Try wildideabuffalo.com, they have some awesome stuff. There's a book on the site about how he company was founded also. I highly recommend it, that's how I found the company. I picked up a copy for dirt cheap when borders was goin out of business

Most bison is raised in Montana/Wyoming (one of my mom's cousins raises a herd). If you have a traditional butcher anywhere near you it shouldn't be difficult to get your hands on some, or you could order steaks from someone like these guys. There are a string of supermarkets in NY and PA called Wegmans that has a game meat section; when I lived out there my ex and I would do a weekly game meat night (rabbit, elk, bison, duck, goose, etc.). I still haven't gotten around to trying beefalo (cow/buffalo hybrid).

I still can't pass up a medium-rare 3 inch thick bone-in filet grilled and saute-finished in butter...fucking amazing piece of meat. Stone crab claws are also up there on my list of entrees.

Edit: I had some springbok ribs when I was in South Africa this spring that were pretty damn high up there as well, probably the best of the antelope-like critters I've eaten. My buddy tried to make it a point to have me eat every indigenous animal we could find which proved to be rather entertaining (had water buffalo, gnu [wildebeest], blesbok, eland, duiker, reedbuck, and red hartebeest in addition to the springbok). You'd be amazed at how many different species of antelope/buffalo type things they have out there (we probably only managed to eat a quarter of them). Apparently zebra is excellent, but we didn't get our hands on any.

Oh man, game meat night sounds like such a good idea. Unfortunately my girlfriend isn't very adventurous when it comes to cooked animals. I guess I could just do it myself...

Has anyone eaten horse? I saw some tiny segment on the show Taboo on NatGeo about it and think it would be interesting.

Horse has sort of been banned in the US for the last six years or so (they basically passed a bill that banned funding for the USDA to inspect butchered horse meat). Supposedly this ban has been lifted, but I've never heard of anyone actually seeing - more or less purchasing - any horse meat. I know it's considerably more common (but still rather rare) in France and Switzerland, but I didn't get the chance to sample any when I was in Europe. I'd give it a shot though, I don't particularly like horses anyway (something that big shouldn't be that stupid, and anything with four legs shouldn't trip/fall as often as they do).

Ever since this thread was started I've been looking around for healthy options close to me. I'm happy to say that I've turned up a rather interesting site. Eatwild.com has an assload of farms listed from around the country along with a lot of great info about grass fed/finished meats, fresh eggs and raw milk. And Bonus! Theres a couple farms within 20 minutes of my house, score!

That's a nice little directory, thanks (eatwild.com). I found some people pretty close to me I might be hitting up for some food to test out.

That posts reminds me of when I was in the military. I used to dream about my mom's cooking while I was away. Eventually I moved off base and had my own place. Decided to learn how to cook. The shit I made back then, that I thought was good...would probably laugh at it now. But I was trying. These days, pretty sure I am a better cook than she is. Or at least in the neighborhood. Love doing it.

No problem. Thanks again to you on the local harvest site.

I was never big into cooking until pretty recently. I've been dating someone for close to 2 years now & she has a daughter so when we go out to eat it usually costs quite a bit. Soooo, if I learn to cook I spend a lot less money and make food that's way better for all of us. Now the only thing I have to do is get her to be a little more adventurous when it comes to food. Baby steps though, at least she likes fresh salmon...

Ahh, shit. Were you the one on CBMB in Fans First with that whole South Africa adventure thread? I enjoyed that a lot if so.

Yep, had an absolute blast. Actually I'm still not sure if I preferred the South Africa portion of that trip or the wandering through the Germanic countries...Austria was absolutely incredible. Ehh, who cares, that entire experience was fucking awesome.

Lobster, asparagus(grilled, steamed, wrapped with bacon) and a healthy dose of homemade coleslaw.

Not so healthy .... Pizza(beef, bacon and mush). Poutine with "curds" cheese and I love me a nice homemade burger stuffed with onions and mushrooms!
