oh, and while i havent installed any temp monitoring software yet, the bios is reporting a cpu temp of 32-35... that alright for a stock 6600k in the bios right?

and speaking of temp monitoring software, any recommendations? thanks.

and i just thought of one more question, the very corner of the fan on my cpu cooler touches a heatsink on the motherboard, thats not a big deal right?

32-35 is a good idle temp. I like HWmonitor (cpuid) too, though some people like cpu-z better.

I would get MSI afterburner too. Its made for OCing your gpu. But it also lets you set up a custom fan profile on your gpu. So even if you aren't going to OC, imo its worth it to tweak the fan profile. In my experience, fan profiles from manufacturers are often not as aggressive at the hot end as I would like. Seems like the manufacturers sacrifice some cooling for quiet. I usually increase the curve so that the fans run at around 80% as the card approaches 80c.

As far as the fan, what kind of cooler do you have? I use a noctua and the fans are mounted with metal clips. I can raise the fan away from the mobo if I need to. Can you do that?

its actually the plastic frame of the fan thats touching the heatsink, and i may just be being paranoid, but my concern was that it could start to melt.

anyway, windows seems to already be giving me shit. it tried to update, failed something, so then i manually updated and it said updates were installed but that "app is being restored to default" without actually say what app it was. then when i tried to download and run msi afterburner my system completely locked up forcing me to do a hard shut down which i really wish i didnt to have to do this soon. which brings me to another question, can a hard shutdown damage hardware or is simply a risk of data lose/corruption?

Did you do a clean install of windows off a disk? If I was you, I would do another install, but this time download the microsoft media creation tool and use it to make a bootable usb drive and install off that. That should be a way more recent build than anything on a disc.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Also, this is dumb but did you install the latest gpu driver from amd?

If your mobo is on a real old bios, that could also be an issue, maybe?

i installed windows 10 using the retail usb and then let it update after install. i also installed the latest graphics drivers, but yes, the mobo is running on an old bios. you think that could bewhat caused afterburner to lock up the pc?

edit: after reading up a bit i decided to try and go another route and not bother with afterburner for now. i installed uninige heaven and gpuz and ran heaven on max getting scores right inline for the 390 and temps that never exceeded 58 degrees at fans running around 33%. i think im good and if i have no problems outside afterburner i can live with that. ill install some games next and see how that goes.

if i can run stable without messing with anything thats all good. hell, i wasnt even planning on going K series, i simply did so because with the microcenter prices and bundle going k series with a z170 board only cost like 50 bucks more than a locked i5 and decent h series mobo. but i dig having the option to oc in the future.

The plastic thing touching, don't sweat it.

Hard shutdown. Corruption is one, and the other is rapid discharge. The parts are designed to take some abuse from rapid discharge, but not as a regular thing.

As for the looping update. I know there are toots for getting around those, since they come back as a regular problem for a lot of Win 7/8/10 users. Maybe someone beat me to it, short on time, so I'm skimming threads.

well, just got home to find the pc wouldnt wake out of sleep and the mobo was displaying an error code suggesting memory issues. and since i couldnt reset i was forced to do another hard shut down, which fucking sucks. then in the bios the mobo started throwing out pci error codes so i figured since its a mobo running a bios from skylakes launch, which were known to be buggy, maybe that was the issue. therefore i just updated the bios to the most recent version and i havent had the memory or pci error codes but do get a code suggesting an issue with ide or sata, but only in the bios. i can boot just fine so im thinking maybe its because the bios loads before the drives therefore its as if no drives are connected hence it throws out the error code?

device manager says the drive are working properly and bios reads them...

What's the error code? Also keep in mind that not all BIOSes read all drives and some chipsets divert drive management to another controller on the board. So you might have it in SATA1 slot, when the 1-2 slots are reserved for the raid controller and should use slot 3. Or you have it in the SATA6 slot, when it should be SATA1. RTFM for that. ;)

I know your shit is all new and you are trying to take care of it, but you don't have to sweat the hard shut shutdowns.

the sata ports are set up like this

satae0 sata3-1 sata3-0 sata3-2 sata-a0(add on)
satae1 sata3-5 sata3-4 sata3-3 sata-a1(add on)

the manual says "sata3-0 and sata3-1 are shared with satae0 and sata3-4 and sata3-5 are shared with satae1" and "to minimize boot time, use intel z170 sata ports(sata3-0) for bootable devices." im not using satae, so, i plugged my boot ssd into sata3-0 and my hdd into sata3-1. should the hdd be in a different port?

Have you check the mobo manufacturer forums? There is a chance someone else had the same problem.

The forum for my mobo has saved me from a lot of work a couple of times.

You have it right. That was just an idea, and seeing how it was your first build, just threw that out there.

yeah, i cant find much on forums either other than code a6 can be a "red herring." so, i guess ill just wait an see if i have any issues.

but i do have a question. i realized my gpu has dual bio and is in legacy by default and can switch to uefi by hitting a button, and looking into it it seems my windows install is legacy, ill admit im not sure what all this means so my question is does it matter?

Hey, do you like tomb raider? I just got a new gpu and it came with a steam key for rise of tomb raider, but I already have it. You want it?

I think the game is pretty great but I know you are a picky ****.

yea. things are acting weird.

pc seemed to be runnnig fine but then slowed to a crawl and took me like ten minute to shut down the applications i had open and then windows wouldnt shut down forcing yet another hard shutdown. i dont know wtf is going on and it sucks.

while booting up the debug led flashes a whole bunch of shit but i figured that was just a normal cycle since it has no problem posting. idk.

Thats normal for all that shit to cycle through while its posting. I know you prob tired of fuckin installing windows, but Ima recommend again you use that windows media creation tool to make a bootable usb and do a fresh install off of that. MS will have your machine registered now so you won't have to enter a key.

yeah i figured it was just cycling through shit while posting, and i also found an old post on a forum for a z97 asrock board in which asrock supposedly told them that code "Ab" simply means uefi is being displayed, so perhaps its the same for the newer boards maybe my code isnt a6 but ab.

anyway, it does look like im going to have to give windows a fresh install since it doesnt seem to be hardware related. cpu and gpu benchmarks seems good and i just ran memtest for an hour without any errors... so, yep time to reinstall windows. speaking of which, should i do a uefi install this time, and if so how exactly do i go about that?

Good on you getting her built!!!
I'm gathering parts for my build. Should be 3-4 more weeks and I'll have everything.

Here's my part list:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/fHw2pg

The 2nd GPU is probably going to be awhile. I'm also holding off on the BR drive and TV tuner for now. Tuner will probably come 1st for recording hockey.

I'm really liking my choice of case. Yeah, the MB is expensive but Asus stuff has always been good to me and it is just too badass to not build my system on.

Did you get your 6600k on that Microcenter deal too? $237 with tax, I gave my buddy $240 to grab mine since he works in the area and I am way down here in the sticks.
Nice score!
