I'd do a 4th rounder. I'd be hesitant to give up a 3rd for a rental, unless it was an all-pro caliber of a player.

Would the Bears get a compensatory pick if they traded for Thuney and then let him walk in free agency, or how does that work?

For a rental?!? Lol why? The bears a pretenders. Throwing away draft capital.

2 of my 4 positions are on the line? So what exactly are you disagreeing with? Do you value premier/top paid guards/centers, or run stopping specialist over shut down CBs or franchise QBs?

I thought it was obvious from my comment and liking Chris Sojka's comment.

1a) OL
1b) DL
1c) QB

That order

“OL” and “DL” are total position groups. Which positions specifically on the lines are the most important to spend cap space and/or multiple draft picks on? I’m speaking in general, if you were building a team from scratch which positions would you prioritize on the lines? Of course every position is important, but if you had the choice of say the best LT or best LG in the league which do you choose? Best pass rusher or best run stuffer?

Yes, the Bears would get a comp pick. Which is why the Patriots won't trade him for less than a 3rd, because they could hold onto him and get a 3rd when someone else gives him big money. Also, the Bears don't have a 4th.

The comp pick wouldn't come until 2022, so the team trading for Thuney and letting him walk would be giving up a 2021 3rd for a 2022 3rd and 8 games of Thuney. Teams typically don't make moves like this unless they plan on signing the guy to a long-term extension (see Marcus Peters, Jalen Ramsey). But you do get situations where teams have a weak spot and go all in for a ring (KC traded for Ogbah and let him walk, Seattle for Clowney). Seahawks didn't even get a comp for Clowney though as he signed with the Titans way too late to count against the comp pick formula.

They can afford to pay Thuney for the rest of 2020, but then he walks.

I wouldn’t offer more than a day 3 pick. You would get a 3rd round comp pick, back but it wouldn’t be till next year.

This would be a pure rental move and would likely cost to much in picks a money for a team that isn’t really going anywhere
