It's cold blooded how teams can just manipulate a guy's career. I guess he can try and force his way out if hes really upset.
I was thinking I fee "bad" for him, even though he ain't broke by any means, because of the continuous franchise tag.

How much is that going to cost them? $30 mil?

The NFL has to be the worst major sport to play for. The players association is a disgrace.

Any thoughts on signing Haason Reddick?

Do you guys think it’s possible to get him for 2/3 years on a 7/8 million a year deal?
Spielberger who is almost always within 10-20% of the actual contract amount has him at 2y $12.5M AAV. I think he's a great pass rush specialist in theory but apparently Dennis Allen needs his DEs to be over 260 lb. so maybe Reddick is the opposite direction he wants to go in.

I guarantee what ever the tag amount is, its less than he would have gotten guaranteed on a contract that he will now probably have to wait for.

Cant imagine being forced to gamble with my health or depend on another player's performance, before being allowed to sign a contract that pays me my market value, after waiting years to be eligible.

Think they need to increase the ramp on 2nd year in a row franchise tag - getting tagged once is what it is but 2 in a row seems punitive to the player. Higgins in this example will have gone from getting a close to a top 5 at position deal last year at 25 and then getting to sign probably another top 3-4 contract again at 29, but will instead sign his first contract at 27 years old next year and will be 31!!! when he signs his 2nd post-rookie contract.

The total amount of guarantees will obviously be less but he will make way more for 2025 than he would on a long term deal. Worked out great for Cousins but QB doesn’t have the same injury risk.

Still the tag is garbage I think it should just be the average of the top 5 players in the NFL and be fully guaranteed for 3 years. Don’t like the cost then let the player test the market it’s only fair.

Today was JAX's last day to extend Brandon Scherff, looks like he is destined to hit FA. Not the sexiest option but a guy who played 51/51 games the last 3 years and gave up 0 sacks in 2024.

I see media types (and Greg Gabriel) talk about how Poles shouldn’t sign guys like this because it’s a short term solution. The league is so year to year why does it matter? You can’t have every position on a long term deal

The weird thing is that players seem to usually be more than willing to re-sign early if they get market value. Free agency tends to be kind of crappy. So the need to force people to stay on a team doesn't seem to be very high right now. Higgins problem is he's usually banged up... so sitting on these one year deals is probably not ideal for him.

The problem with the 3 year guarantee is that it can screw over the guys driving the market price, like say Justin Jefferson. MN could have locked him at a discount with it. Also the average of the top 5 feels like a lagging number depending on how it's calculated. I'm not confident how they calc it. To use JJ again, his cap hit in 2025 is $15,167,600. Maybe it should be AAV... maybe it needs to be a percentage of the top 5 (like 120%) or maybe just the average of the top 3. Either way, the current method allows teams to be pretty unfair if they want to be.

This free agency class absolutely blows. If I were Poles I would hold back at the start. There will be some really bad contracts. More than usual
I dont really agree the free agent class is that bad. People say this every year. The only positions that are atrocious in FA are rb, te, and qb. There's going to be a ton of decent wr options available even without higgins

Bears (and most teams) have too many holes to find permanent solutions at every single position. FFS the Bears need 3 new starting iOL and then the depth behind it, they arent going to get the 4-5 long term solutions it would take to just replace the iOL this year. Smith is obviously the shiny new toy of iOL Free Agents but Day 1/early Day 2 Rookie + Dalman/Kelly + Fries/Scherff/Zeitler would be a pretty big upgrade over Curhan+Shelton+Pryor that they ended the '24 season on.
