Latest On Matt Garza

By Zach Links [July 21 at 9:27am CST]
Yesterday, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com heard that a deal that would send Matt Garza from the Cubs to the Rangers could still go "either way". Today, it's a different story. Here's the latest on Chicago's prized right-hander..

  • The Rangers and Cubs were set back in talks to the point where the Rangers are now viewed as only one of many teams now in the mix for Garza, Heyman writes. For now it seems that Texas and Chicago made no progress in overcoming the snag that derailed their swap on Friday night, though the Rangers aren't out of it. The deal that fell apart included a package of Rangers prospects, with third baseman Mike Olt and pitchers C.J. Edwards and Neil Ramirez thought to have been on the table.

It makes sense -- I wouldn't say the Cubs got burnt in the Maholm trade to Atlanta, but they took in an elite prospect with a questionable injury history. Vizcaino would more than likely be in the Cubs' major league rotation if he'd been healthy and that's the biggest hole in the Cubs' farm system, starting pitching that's close to the majors. I'm sure they want to avoid going through that again, especially if they're considering multiple pitching prospects. Getting more teams involved forces the Rangers' hand a bit. Maybe they have to consider including Perez if they want to land Garza? At least, that could be what the Cubs are trying to subliminally tell them.

The Cubs had no idea if Vizcaino could stick In the rotation. Yes, he has a very good arm and they will give him a chance to start but the bullpen has always been a very big possibility from the beginning. With the set back, I would say him staying a starter is smaller than it was before.

I love how people defend the botched Marmol to the Angels trade if this trade doesn't happen with the Rangers it will be defended because of the 'medicals' or that fact that Garza should be traded because he 'can't stay healthy'.

Yet the same Theo Worshippers also defend the trade of Maholm to Atlanta and the signing of Scott Baker.

I've been traveling the last few days, so maybe I have missed something so was wondering if someone can update me on exactly how many pitches the great Vizcaino and Baker have thrown in competitive games for the Cubs organization??

I am sure I must have missed at least a no hitter or perfect games from those great additions.

I'll have you know that Baker is doing just fine for Kane County.

He has two starts, and the first he had a 12.00 ERA for 3 innings of work, and a 20.55 ERA for 2-2/3 innings of work in his 2nd outing. That is a 15 plus ERA.

I think his call up to the Cubs should be coming soon. :shot:

Matt Garza Rumors: Sunday

By Zach Links [July 21 at 1:53pm CST]

Yesterday, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com heard that a deal that would send Matt Garza from the Cubs to the Rangers could still go "either way". Today, it's a different story. Here's the latest on Chicago's prized right-hander..
•The Cubs have have worked to draw competing offers into the Garza bidding in order to create alternatives to Texas, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney.
•Cubs manager Dale Sveum told reporters, including the Chicago Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer (Twitter link), Garza will "100 percent" make his start tomorrow against the Diamondbacks.

Got to figure that Jed won't toss the bull pen under the bus right before Garza's start. Not having enough time to get Rusin up and all. Dale saying that Garza is starting his next game was the right thing to do as a manager and looking out for his players. If there is a snag and indecision going on someone needed to grab the reigns and say business as usual until a deal happens.

If Garza makes his start and gets injured at all then Theo and Jed may want to stay out of Chicago for awhile.

Letting him start is a risk NOT worth taking.

High risk move against a team Cubs dont have much success against recently. If Garza busts, price tag lowers; if he looks amazing--it soars.

Based on track record of the boy blunders--I wont be surprised when they **** up this one car funeral too.

Yeah but they're forgiven for not making the egregious error of trading Marmol for garbage.

Yesterday, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com heard that a deal that would send Matt Garza from the Cubs to the Rangers could still go "either way". Today, it's a different story. Here's the latest on Chicago's prized right-hander:

  • A Major League source tells Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe the Red Sox's interest level in Garza is deepening (Twitter link). This comes in the wake of the news Clay Buchholz will seek a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews tomorrow. Manager John Farrell, as quoted by WEEI.com's Alex Speier on Twitter, explained the purpose of the visit is for "verification and clarification to get some peace of mind."

What Sveum must do is limit the pitch count.

Winning isn't the priority so don't pitch him at all. We may end up having to accept more injured prospects if he blows up in his next start.

No reason to get the Corvette out of the garage to go muddin.......

That could set the rewarding journey back a few paces considering Garza is the Cubs best trade market pawn.

Oh Jesus Christ !!!! There is so much of the future riding on this.

Either he pitches and keeps demonstrating he's healthy or teams will balk at the opportunity because he isn't staying fresh in a routine. You pitch him. That's his job and what he is paid to do.

For the last two seasons he's been a pawn for a trade return. That's what he's being paid to do. Not any different than Dempster, Manhole'm, or Feldman.

Welcome to Theo's used car lot where the best should be in the showroom waxed and polished like a cucumber.

Prostate.

OK, MS. I don't necessarily agree with you, but I did get a laugh out of the humorous way you presented Theo's used car lot. Good stuff!
