As of now they have not talked about a trade. The Giants could have interest in a Cubs catcher...Hill (hope ) Soto or someone if their farm system. The Cubs had scouts over the weekend watching the Giants. The Giants are also interested in Reds catcher Ramon Hernandez.

Thoughts?

If we move soto we better get a boat load.

If we move hill Hendry probably gave Sabean a hand job.

Soto is an inexpensive club-controlled catcher who can be awesome when he's not fat and hurt. I think his "off" seasons (2009, this season) would sink his value a bit, but he's got two arb years left and the Giants need a better catcher than what they've got so far.

Hill should've been non-tendered or released  You'd have to pay another team to give up a roster spot for him.

I think Soto gets a couple B or C prospects back but not much more. If he were ROY or 2010 Soto, he'd probably get more, but odd-year Soto is pretty meh. I'll be sad to see him go as he's pretty cool, but he'd help the Cubs most by bringing something back in trade.

Who on earth is going to give you a boat load for a guy has hit .230 or below in two of the last 3 seasons?

It's not always about batting average. Soto does have good power and he's pretty capable behind the plate. He is also older and injury-prone, so you're right that he won't command a boat-load in trade, but he'll get something and it'll likely be on the good side.

You also have to consider that the Giants' offense sucks balls. Any upgrade is good. Also, while their ultimate plan is to have Posey continue to be their catcher, he's got a good enough bat that they'd likely protect him by slotting him at 1B with Soto behind the dish for the next couple years of club control, and that's about when Posey will enter his arb seasons as well. I don't know what they plan to do with Brandon Belt or Aubrey Huff, but I'd think about getting rid of Huff (what a bad contract) and using Belt in the OF and protecting Posey at 1B. Soto is older and probably not as good offensively as Posey or Belt are going to be, so his value is maximized at catcher.

Just my thoughts.

Looking at the FA class of catchers, I would be okay with this, if one of those club option guys don't get picked up, but that isnt too likely I don't think, because they all are relatively cheap. That being said, I'd like to keep soto, unless we can get a really really nice haul

Which is why he honestly shouldn't be moved. You aren't going to get what he is worth so therefore why move him.

Regardless since June 9th he is hitting 256/348/513 so he is starting to come around and will hopefully continue and if he were to be traded bring back more of a return than he would have a month ago.

:doorrofl:

keep dreaming

Even in a "down" year he has an sOPS+ of 109 and a WAR thus far of 1.5 which prorates out to around a 3 for the season.

Plus he is under team control for two more years so yeah I am not giving him away for nothing. If all we get back is a Mark DeRosa type return I am going to be quite pissed. Especially since we have nothing of value to replace him with.

That's simply not realistic poodski. Soto is good but he's not Johnny Bench

Suggesting that they trade Soto doesn't mean they'll actually do it, and at the same time this isn't like a salary dump trade either. But you have to come to terms with the fact that Soto is older and injury-prone and inconsistent. At the same time you realize that he has a good set of skills for the position and he will get something back. It won't be Brandon Belt, but he'll get something. Keeping an aging and potentially declining catcher while his value is at a max (still club-controlled, still inexpensive) and while the Cubs are several major pieces away from contention is unwise.

Well Belt was more of a joke but I don't think a good prospect an okay one and a meh one is out of line fir soto.

A B-, C+, and a C prospect isn't all that much IMO for Soto.

the season is over we aren't going anywhere we can replace him in FA he honestly is very overrated IMO. But again im old fashion i don't even know what WAR is im not into advanced baseball stats lol advance basketball is the only advanced stats i really follow.

I want an ace under 30, a middle of the rotation guy, half of Soriano's contract paid, and a top 10 prospect for Soto

...and a partridge in a pear tree. :buttrock:

The problem poodski is that Soto is only worth a 8-15 prospect from a team. Especially a team like the Giants. You want to get what he'd be worth if he fulfilled his potential and that won't happen given Soto's track record
