Anyone ever stayed at the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas? Wifey wanted to stay downtown and we've never been. I heard they have a good poker room with action pretty much 24/7. Any truth to that? Any ever been?

I'm going to vegas later this summer for the first time. Staying at Caesars palace. I imagine most hotels have action 24/7, especially in the summer. Enjoy.

Old Vegas sucks. I went down there to check it out one of the years I went. It's dumpy, and the casinos are all outdated and smelly.
The Vegas strip is beginning to suck too. I've been going for 10 years for a conference, and it's only gotten worse.
Now I know why people stay at Wynn and Rio. It's off the strip from all of the tourist clowns that go overboard on their meth filled "What happens in Vegas leads to out of state warrants."

The economic collapse made Vegas a ghost town during the week.
I can say that for the first time in a while the Strip was busy 24/7.

Wynn is on the Strip, but like all the other mega resorts it located far back from the street.

I've stayed at the GN, it's the best hotel casino in Downtown, it is on par with ave to below avg strip properties think Flamingo or Ballys. Big notch down from the best places on the strip like Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian, and Caesars.

BlackHawkPaul is partially right there are some shity places downtown (DT), Golden Nugget is not one of them. The best part of DT is the low table limits, I'm a craps player and there are very few if any strip casinos I can afford to gamble. Also DT they have bands playing on different stages all summer in the street, a step up from suburban Chicago summer fests, not much of a step. It's free and the casinos open bars right out on the street, some with dancers. It is kind of low rent, but it is a party.

Bottom line GN is cheaper than strip properties but much nicer than other DT places. Plus if you want fancy stuff you can take a cab or a bus to the strip, it's not a prison.

One more thing, GN has a great pool called the Shark Tank. If you can afford it the cabanas are great.

51 is all over this...
If not some grand deal screw the big hotels.
Stay anywhere and go everywhere.
You're not there to sleep anyway!

Thanks, fellas! To be honest, we are looking forward to the sleep as we're going without the kids. I want to sleep in, eat well, ****, play cards and go to the movies a couple times.

Yeah, that's why I consider it really not to be a part of the strip.

Good post, ESPECIALLY the bold. Gotta have a low limit table for craps. Then lay big odds on the bets on minimum bets (I'm sure you know that).

**** yes!

It's messed up my wife can play quarter video poker anywhere in town, but I have to search everywhere for a $5 table. Seriously, she saying let's go to Bellagio I'm like great what am I going to do there, $25 min craps bet. I got three numbers working with double odds and 7 out, $225 down in 2 minutes. No thanks, I'll go sit in the sports book until your done. Later on I'll head downtown or off strip to gamble.

Week days at 10AM you can still find an occasional $5 table on the strip, forget it at night and all day on weekends.

I, too, am a lover of the $5 craps. Besides Poker, that's the only other game I play.

You know where to find the $5 tables. In some of the really messed up DT casinos, the ones BlackHawkPaul was talking about they have $2 tables, and the lingering aroma of urine.

For inexpensive and fair poker play:
I used to play $2-$4 hold'em and had some fun. Then there were so many stories about teams, I got paranoid and every time I lost I was seeing teams. Now it's all about the tournaments, low buy ins and no teams.

Here's a list:
http://www.cardplayer.com/lasvegaspoker

$60 buy in at Flamingo is fun cheap and fast, even if you win it's only an hour or two.
http://www.cardplayer.com/lasvegaspoker/2533

I avoid tournaments with a second buy in, it get's messed up at the deadline. I have no problem with $100 or $200 buy ins, just wanted to let you know how cheap they can be.

I want a trip report when you get back.

When are you headed there?
I am going again mid july, we booked 4 nights at the venitian. My lady is speaking at a conference, and we scored a Piazza suite at no cost. Pretty damn excited.

I was thinking of getting a room at the golden nugget for a night before or after, because I have never stayed downtown- only visited for a few hours at a time. Thought I should do it just to say I did.

If I am out there before you, I will report back- If you go first, let me know what to expect!

Venetian has the BEST day time, mid week poker tourneys from what I've read. Buy-ins around $150-$200, with 30-50 PPL. Perfect. Can make some serious money without playing a 12 hour tourney. I plan on playing in their tourney one, if not two days. We'll see how it goes. We're headed out mid-September.

Outstanding, tourneys are the way to go. The very high stake games everybody knows each other so they all know there are no teams, but for low limit stuff tourneys are the only way to avoid team play.

If you need anything else, feel free to PM me.

Good luck man, have a great time.

I would get offers to stay for free at various Vegas casino's because I live by the Gulf Coast and gamble a good bit. All of them also offered 200 dollars of free play if I stayed with them. Went to vegas for the first time, checked into 4 different hotels in the same day and got 800 dollars worth of free play. It was a good day.

You must be playing quite a bit to get that much free play. Congrats.

It's a lot easier for machine players to get rated than table players. Just put the card in the machine, play, you're rated. Trying to get rated by a pit boss watching 10 different tables or a craps dealer is impossible unless you are making huge bets.

My wife who plays machines for nothing compared to what I play at the tables gets all the offers. I would think this giant industry would figure a better method to identify real players. They have been using RFID chips capable of tracking table games for years, I know they exist but I've never seen them used to rate players.

Im not a huge tables guy. I will play Roulette and Blackjack, but I stay away from craps. I was always told that craps will end you. lol But, all my friends love it. I stick to slots and played a ton of poker(No limit only kind of guy). I havent played much recently, but I would sit in there for long, long stretches of time. Im a big sports gambler now doe. I agree with you that unless you are getting to the high rollers tables. They really dont do much for you. The poker rooms I played in would take care of me, but the tables were nothing. I like slots when I want to mentally check out. Wheel of Fortune! lol The casino's dont care about their hotels, so thats how they try to get the gulf coast people there by selling them free rooms all year round. I will say they never sent me the free play offers like that again.

Were you getting rated at the Roulette or Blackjack tables? In Vegas that takes giant piles of cash.

The whole sports book thing has gone so far South in recent years it makes me sad. Back in the day anybody could watch NFL games in the Caesars sports book with free drinks. Now you have to show a $50 ticket just to sit there, and even more $$$$ bet to get a drink. Is there some way of getting rated in the sports book?

Corporations suck.
