That trade is diminished by the fact the Bears and Butkas never made the playoffs so in the end that trade did nothing for the franchise postseason wise.
One of the best examples of this franchise. You have Butkus AND Sayers but they never make the playoffs.

I disagree with vigor on this one. Butkus was an all time great. Saying that the trade is somehow diminished because he didnt lead the team to the playoffs is quite reductive.

It is in my book.

I wonder how many people are going to realize that this sort of return was only possible because the Bears resisted the temptation of drafting a quarterback with the first overall pick?

If they resist that temptation again, they could very well have a top to bottom playoff-ready roster by middle of next year, accounting for rookies to get up to speed like we saw with Dexter and Wright this year, AND likely also get a chance to do it all AGAIN next year, because any part of trading out of that #1 overall pick will likely include the #1 pick in the 2025 draft.

If Poles is shrewd about this, we could be looking at the biggest highway robbery of all time, with yearly picks in the top 5 regardless of how the team performs, and the list of what the Bears got in return for the Panthers will look like that list of failed bears QBs since Sid Luckman...

this was in 2017 but they had Dick Butkus as the best trade for the Bears. They traded a 2nd and 4th rounder to the Steelers for their first and it ended up being the 3rd pick. Still think this one will probably top that one
"On the first day of the 1964 NFL Draft, the Bears traded their second- and fourth-round selections to the Steelers in exchange for Pittsburgh's first-round choice the following year."

One thing that most people didn't even notice is that the 1964 draft came after the 1963 season, a season where the Bears won the championship. This means that the 2nd rounder and 4th rounder the Bears traded were the last picks in each round. So the Bears got Butkus for basically an early 3rd and 5th rounders, not bad for a Hall of Fame player.

I think Poles had to give Fields 2023 because of the tumultuous nature of his time as a Bear.

Also, I can’t believe Young was ever a consideration the way Poles favors athletic freaks.

I hope Fields continues to progress so the Bears can trade the number one again with confidence.

I've been praising this trade since it happened. But, I don't think anybody would be complaining right now if the Bears drafted Stroud either. It's better for CCS purposes to be left unsaid. So for purposes of your agenda it might be better to refrain from the thank God the Bears didn't draft a QB concept. Right now Stroud is totally killing it, and he doesn't have Tyreek Hill and Kelce. And I know he just had his first quiet game.

They were never going to take Stroud. Just like they were never going to take Mahomes. I am not going to get pissed over someone they never were going to get.

Now you want to talk back in the day when we botched the Dave mcGinnes hire, and were going to have Bruce Arians as the OC and Kurt Warner as QB?

Now THAT gets me riled.

Everything is great about the trade with the only negative point being they could have the most obvious Offensive Rookie of the Year and franchise QB in possibly forever. Don't know why to bring up the only negative as your argument.

The trade itself and value will be the all time best by luck of CAR sucking so back. But it will ultimately be graded by the draft pick selections that are made. SO FAR, the only "homerun" part of the trade is DJ Moore imo.

They weren't going to draft him though -why torture yourself?

And you know this how?

Also, that is how you rate something, by measuring it against the alternatives. Stroud was a top alternative.

Common sense? The fact that they traded the pick in the first place and stated early they were trading the pick?

It appeared, though we could be wrong, that neither Mahomes nor Stroud were on the Bears radar for being a real option, thus, trying to look at an alternate reality is silly.

The real thing to consider is what would you prefer:

1. Wright at 10, a 4th rounder in 2024, DJ Moore, the Panthers #1 pick (probably the first pick) in 2024 and a Panthers' 2nd round pick in 2025

or

2. Bryce Young and whatever you could get for trading Fields during the 2023 season

I would choose #1 all day, everyday and that would be without the knowledge that Young shit the bed in Carolina.

it's so good it makes up for Jerry Angelo's 2007 and 2011 offseasons

and since you put it this way, as a Marshall fan, **** it, Moore trade is tops
When you say Jerry Angelo's 2007, you really mean Lovie's 2007, the year that he gained more power than the GM, right?
