It appeared, though we could be wrong, that neither Mahomes nor Stroud were on the Bears radar for being a real option, thus, trying to look at an alternate reality is silly.

The real thing to consider is what would you prefer:

1. Wright at 10, a 4th rounder in 2024, DJ Moore, the Panthers #1 pick (probably the first pick) in 2024 and a Panthers' 2nd round pick in 2025

or

2. Bryce Young and whatever you could get for trading Fields during the 2023 season

I would choose #1 all day, everyday and that would be without the knowledge that Young shit the bed in Carolina.

Yeah but even if Stroud wasn't on Poles radar which we don't know, you don't measure Poles decision by the alternatives that he has it narrowed down to. You measure it by all the alternatives that were available. And drafting Stroud was certainly an alternative.

As I said, I think the trade was phenomenal. But to use this trade to say thank God we didn't draft a QB like somebody said is not correct. We may find ourselves talking about Stroud for many years to come, maybe not..

Ok, let's check out your theory with a story, because stories are telling.

You and I, after a Bears game, go to the local watering hole to have a few brews and to talk about the game. Across from where we sit, there is a hands-down knockout blonde bombshell talking to her cute friend.

You are a ladies man while I am married and faithful. You and the bombshell do a little flirting while I egg you on, telling you to go pick her up.

You vacillate between going to talk to her and begging off and going home to get some rest because of an important client that you must deal with in the morning.

Well, you eventually decide to hook up with her and find out that she is bat-shit crazy and not worth the effort.

Now, should your friends judge that decision to hook up with her and lose that important client versus going home, not meeting that psycho and keeping your important client?

Or

Making the decision to go home, not meet the psycho and keeping your important client versus deciding to choose the cute friend, still keeping your client happy and marrying that cute friend once you found out that she was the most incredible person that you had ever met in your life?

See?

One plays true as a decision between two realistic options in that situation. The second one just replaces the realistic options with a best-case-scenario-with-what-we-now-know, which makes it an unfair and unrealistic option.

this was in 2017 but they had Dick Butkus as the best trade for the Bears. They traded a 2nd and 4th rounder to the Steelers for their first and it ended up being the 3rd pick. Still think this one will probably top that one
Thanks for posting this....I remember 4 of these trades....I'm surprised that the Ram trade for QB Bill Wade isn't on the list. He led the Bears to the '63 Championship. He had a Jay Cutler arm, but unlike the finger pointer (my nickname for him) Wade was a team player and leader.

I think the OP put that in the perspective of what else was gained along with the luck of where this years acquired picks reside and what compensation we get from those as well. Looks like it could become the highest value traded pick in the history of the league but if we don't make the correct QB decision, it may not matter.

Could become a Young meme.

"Most valuable QB of all time"... with what trading for him cost the team of Ray Carruth. Probably 5 1sts, a 2nd, DJ Moore and then some.
Or... Caleb/Drake, Wright, DJ, and a 2nd which is effectively 3 1sts (with a #1 pick) and a 2nd.

Could become the greatest (most valuable) trade in league history. Does Mahomes get you 6 1sts value?.. but Mahomes already cost KC an extra 1st and a 3rd? Do they get 7 1sts?
I believe there is a rule that a team can NEVER trade more than 4 1st Rd picks in any trade.....and the most is 3 on draft day.

I disagree with vigor on this one. Butkus was an all time great. Saying that the trade is somehow diminished because he didnt lead the team to the playoffs is quite reductive.

The goal of any transaction is to help the team win. Butkas is an all time great but in the final analysis we did not make a single playoff game with him. So no it isnt the greatest trade in franchise history because it did absolutely nothing to change the franchise's ability to win championships.

The rule is you can only trade picks from the next 2 drafts before the draft ie 2024 and 2025 or the next 3 drafts on draft day ie 2024, 2025 and 2026. So you can trade more thab 4 firsts but that would only be the case if a team happened to have multiple firsts in an upcoming draft.

That trade is diminished by the fact the Bears and Butkas never made the playoffs so in the end that trade did nothing for the franchise postseason wise.
If the percentage number of playoff teams were the same back then, as the inflated numbers now....they would have made the playoffs a few years. Off the top of my head, '65, '68 for sure. Probably more years.

I don’t think anything will ever beat the Herschel Walker trade

I think Poles had to give Fields 2023 because of the tumultuous nature of his time as a Bear.

Also, I can’t believe Young was ever a consideration the way Poles favors athletic freaks.

I hope Fields continues to progress so the Bears can trade the number one again with confidence.
Starting to come around to that thought. I will gladly eat crow if Fields continues to show the growth he has since he came back from injury.

Bears still have this years first and next years second to use. So the jury will be out for a long time for me.
And if the Bears keep Fields and trade down to say Washington get their first next year, the Bears could have another top 5 pick

Mahomes was a serious option for the Bears in 2017. He ended up as their number two option behind Trubisky. That still blows my mind.

So what. No one was succeeding here. Trubisky was only 1 of many problems.
I don’t believe that at all. The 2018 Bears would have been a legit SB contender with Mahomes.

So which trade did help the team win championships that is suddenly better than Butkus? Ogunleye helped the Bears get to a championship game, is trading for Ogun a better trade than moving up for Butkus?

Alternatively, are you willing to admit that you are holding your opinion on the trade for a player hostage to how the total team performs? Because it is a team sport, and it's fairly hard for a linebacker to lead a team to the playoffs in any era. They're not often the ones scoring points.
