My biggest issue is I have smallish hands and short stubby fingers so I have issues sometimes forming certain chords or reaching frets. Take for example "Under the Bridge" by RHCPs. I cannot make whatever F chord he plays at the very beginning as my pinky can't stretch that far without hitting other strings.

Inject HGH straight into your fingertips. Worked for me!

No one has discussed what strings they use yet

This could be interesting
GHS boomers 11-52. Again, i don't play often, but I usually play tuned to D and I like the sound they make.

Trev - here is a solution to that pinky problem if you really want to move ahead with that song. Forget the pinky entirely as that is on the 5th fret of the 5th string which is a d note, that makes virtually the same sound as the open D. So play it exactly as you were going to except start out with your 4th and 5th fingers off the fingerboard. Your first not is the hitting the open D (4th string open), and if you want to get it complexly right hit that with the 2nd string at the same time on the 3rd fret, which is also a D. Then for the second note immediately put your 4th finger down on 4th fret (F#), and continue on with what you are doing.

May seem complex in writing like that, but if we were in person I could you have up and running playing this even if your pinky didn't exist.

That actually makes complete sense and definitely would work. I'll have to mess around with the acoustic when I get home tonight.

I definitely need to start learning more and memorizing notes and scales.

My current 3

1980's Kramer Pacer, Originally White, now smoke stained yellow from playing in bars, heavily modified, EMG-85 Pickups, and I'm on my 3rd neck, I wore the other 2 out.

Black Charvelle Model 4 (Middle), Early 1990's or late 1980's I believe, Jackson Active pickups.

Black "New" Kramer Baretta, I say new because it is the new Baretta model, not the old model like Eddie played, it is probably 10 years or less old, it is neck through body construction, (body and neck are 1 piiece) the pickups were garbage, so I put EMG 81's in it, this guitar has incredible sustain, a result of the 1 piece construction.

I have a Marshall half stack, cheap Marshall head, 100 watt, but tube pre-amp, and a vintage Marshall cabinat, with 125 watt Vintage Celestion speakers, when I bought it I paid more for it than the car I was driving then, but my car was a piece of shit.

I played in metal bands in the bars for around 25 years, never made any real money but did it because I loved doing it. My last band was an Iron Maiden/Metallica Tribute band, 5 years of that wore me out, so I just play in a small cover band now and enjoy it.

Since I've expanding this chat to include drums, here's some of my handiwork. Now that I have 3 kids, I don't do it as much anymore, but I used to custom build drums (and teach a bit). To the point where I was up to about 30 snares and like 12 kits (some vintage, some new, some of my own build). I'm now down to 3 snares and two kits (one jazz size that I built and a vintage 1958 Ludwig Club date that I bought off of Bun E. Carlos from Cheap Trick and restored).

Here's one of the last snares I built. Maple shell with kevazingo bubinga veneer on the shell and olive ash burl on the hoops. Had a body shop buddy clear it with low VOC automotive clear:

Just borrowed my buddy's Strat to play around with. It's a cheaper Strat though, so nothing too crazy.

Are bass guitars allowed?

I am completely in love with the sound of an acoustic bass and always wanted to grab one. I don't really play, but still...that sound.

Agreed. I play in a metal band but we play acoustics sets from time to time. Love playing that thing.

Fine instruments...Mesa makes a great Bass amp

They sure do. I used to look at people's stacks at our gigs that were twice the size and then when they are on stage they sound like crap. This thing puts out more sound than most and never distorts. It packs so much into a little space. My band's old bassist bought the Mesa amp and cabinet and the 5 string Ibanez in the photo thinking he would learn to play bass. He sucked for a long time so they kicked him out. I bought it all from him for $1100. Just ridiculous.

I'm not crazy about their guitar amps however..I had a "lonestar special", and I had a lot of problems with it..But the Bass amps are tits!

That's werd cause Carlos Santana had a lot to do with the development of Mesa Boogie.. He has great tone and is a great player, but it just didn't translate into a quality guitar amp..Oh well, I was always a Fender amp guy anyway..

I have a friend that just loves his Mark IV though
