I suggested him and Happ together to upgrade a SP slot

So -- is Happ alone good enough to bring you that SP you'd rather have? Because Chatwood doesn't add any value to a trade right now, with the exception of, perhaps, adding an innings-eater to a team that has already accepted they will lose 100 games this year.

Not that many teams, who are 15 to 20 games under .500 and might be looking for badly under-performing innings eaters, have starting pitchers that I would personally think are worth trading Happ straight-up for. Those rare situations, like the Mets with deGrom or Syndegaard, are such that Happ won't nearly get you a pitcher of that caliber. Toss in Bote and Russell, maybe -- and if you want us to take Chatwood off your hands, toss in Edwards or Strop as well.

In other words, in this trade market, getting a team to take Chatwood in a bundled trade means that you lessen the value on the table from your other trade pieces, not add to that value.

You really want to pay in talent just to get Chats off the team? I'd rather keep the talent and let Chats languish in the 'pen until he either figures out how to throw strikes, or decides his game is better suited for the Northern League.

If you hate the guy that much and just want him gone, it's better to DFA him and eat the salary. Because packaging him in a bundle means you need to add another guy into the bundle that you wouldn't have had to add without Chats in the package, just to compensate for his current negative value.

I love how everyone thinks the Cubs are idiots for not trading away players that are under-performing. Like Chatwood right now, or Heyward for much of the past two seasons.

For all of you who keep carping so derisively about how much we need to trade Chatwood, please remember that you can't just trade people you don't want. You also have to find another team who wants that player.

Here is an exercise for y'all. Next time you start complaining that the Cubs need to trade Chatwood, I'd also like you to include a paragraph that sums up your pitch to another club as to why *they* want to acquire said Chatwood. Otherwise, what you have is an old Monty Python sketch:

"I'll give you this slimy, stinking dead rat for that bar of gold!"

"Why in the world would i want to do that?"

"Oh, did I say a slimy, stinking dead rat? Oh, no, I meant this magic mouse who will bring you great luck!"

"If he's magic, why do you want to trade him?"

"Umm..."
I said cut their loss release him and just eat the money...
Not getting anything for him in a trade outside maybe a low end player and eating a chunk of the money owed anyways...

Only thing they can hope for with Chatwood now, is that he excels as a reliever the rest of this season..

Maybe they get a team to bite in the offseason on him as a 5th starter..
Or
Maybe he just a better mid reliever then he is a starter for them next year

yes, but there are teams out there that would take Chatwood if you paid half the money. One of the biggest teams right now that may be taking some big names are the Padres. They do not have room for all their prospects on their 40 man and will start losing players to the rule 5. There are talks they want Archer or if the Mets trade Syndergard or DeGrom, they will probably have the best set of prospects. That is a team that would help you save half your money for a Chatwood, someone they have seen alot of over the past few years.

As far as Bote, the Chatwood to the pen deal is not going to help him stick around, since the cubs have been carrying 13 pitchers all year. When that switches to roles in the second half, they might get to 12 and keep Bote up here. Its not like he needs every day at bats because he is going to move into a position full time here anyway. You know Joe will get him in the game. Either way, I cant see them only keeping KB on the 10 day, seems like this is going to need an old three weeks if they want him to finish the year healthy.
