Considering we routinely see 2+ OT every playoff year (and even up to a record 6 OTs) I wouldn't assume that.

An extra 20 minutes would just kill that team. What about if they had to turn around and play another game the next night?

5 minutes of overtime is fine. 10 minutes is pushing it a little. I'm fine with the shootout because for the NHL it serves a purpose of ending the game and getting a winner. I'm not a fan of it but I understand it.
It's part of the territory of being a professional athlete. Back-to-backs after OT happen in MLB and NBA. It doesn't kill them.

These are adults we're talking about, who have control over their bodies, not kids who have to go to school the next day.

 odd argument

I would think a team could score a goal relatively quickly in a 20:00 OT, 5 v 5.

No. The 4 on 4 is what breeds the bunches of chances in overtime. Extending that to 7 or 10 minutes could help. 20 minutes of 5 on 5 is just more of what brought on the tie to begin with.

Tired hockey is bad hockey. The schedule with the current alignment is packed tight enough (hence players wanting to skip the all star break) and features enough shitty travel situations for teams. Besides, hockey broadcasts are long enough to begin with. Bringing on the potential for another 20 minutes of play? Never going to happen from a TV perspective alone.

Fact is that the shootout isn't going anywhere.

10 minutes would be fine, but anything more would probably just get shot down by the NHLPA. I could see the complaints now, hawks in Calgary Friday night, play the full 60 and still tied. Plus another intermission before the OT period your looking at least 45 minutes extra time where they have to travel to Edmonton or Vancouver the next day for a back to back set.

if its 4 on 4 its fine, hell 5 on 5 is still fine. an extra 5 mins is not going to hurt anyone. lets be real.

Completely different situations. Not only do the MLB and NBA go to much fewer OTs/Extra Innings because it is much easier to score points/runs but the grind of those games/season are clearly different than the NHL.

Like EverydayBuff said, slow hockey is bad hockey. It would get so sloppy and just for an extra point? When it is OT in the Post Season it is a completely different situation.

Continuous OT has no place in the NHL regular season and there is no way that ever happens.

Oh for sure. There's no guarantee that it will get finished in one OT period... it could go 2, 3 extra periods as we've seen in the playoffs. Continuous OT will never happen during the season but I do like a 10 min OT and that 3-2-1 point system someone mentioned. The extra 5 minutes of of OT will roughly match the time wasted doing the tiresome shootout.

Long games are part of the territory of professional sports. If these are kids with jobs and school outside of hockey, I can see holding back. With these athletes making millions, my sympathy is non existent for athletes for playing extra time.

I do agree it it probably won't be enacted in regular season, I still want to see games completed on the ice.

Or just throw away the OT all together, split the points after 60 min, and be done with it. I hate skill competitions deciding winners.

No they aren't, especially in the regular season. While these athletes are in great shape, you can't just run them ragged which is what an OT system that only ended a game when a team scored would do. They are humans to, they need time for their bodies to re-energize.

Hey, marathon runners are in amazing shape...I say we make them run back to back marathons. I'm exaggerating...but hopefully that helps you see the point.

Yeah they are. If you don't think long regular season games are part of the territory in other sports, I don't know what to say to you.

Obviously hockey combines the physical and the grueling schedule, that doesn't change that I don't want to see a shootout end games. Either end it at 60, 70 or 80 minutes.

People making millions of dollars playing a kids game, I don't have sympathy for.

You average 16 posts a day while I average 4.5 posts a day...so really?

I explained it before. I work infront of a computer from 7AM - 5PM every weekday. I have two screens and a laptop on at all times for what I do...which means I have several browsers and programs open at one time. I work in an office so I am able to do this. So most of the time I am "logged in" but not really active on the website...a time like now I am because I'm eating lunch at my desk.

Sound good?
