Needing depth on the blue line, the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks made a trade Monday afternoon with the Ottawa Senators to acquire puck-moving defenseman Chris Campoli.

The Blackhawks will send center Ryan Potulny plus a conditional second-round pick in the 2011 Entry Draft to the Senators, for Campoli as well as a conditional seventh-round pick.

26 years old. 1.4 mill cap hit. RFA after this year. Kills penalties.

Fills an obvious hole. I read we gave up a 2d round pick. That seems like a lot. Our scouts must have him as much better than Boyton. Otherwise why give away Nick and give up a second round pick?

I have Zyuzin, Quint, and Karpotsev ahead of Boynton at this point.

I am a fan of this deal even though I think the 2nd rounder may have been slightly high. Makes much more sense than any of the other rumors we heard leading up to the deadline regarding Rivet or one of the older washed up blueliners.

Like many have said lets see what this guy can do on a team with some depth. He did improve going from the horrible Islanders to the mediocre horrible Sens. I can't see why he wouldn't up his game a little more here with us.

Groundbreaking deal? Of course not but it does add what we were looking for on the back end. For a 5/6 guy Campoli is a solid pick up in my opinion.

I think people will be relatively happy with Campoli.

Hawks have 3 second round picks next year and have up the worst of the 3 for Campoli...not too bad for a shot blocking penalty killer that this team needs.

I agree with The Canadian Douchebag

I think the Hawks had 3- 2nd round picks coming up. He's definately an upgrade from Hendy...can play PP or PK. His 73 hits easily moves him up to 2nd in the Dgroup. To be only a -3 on that team where Karlsson (-31), Gonchar (-16), Kuba (-26), Philips (-25) ...and they were -57 in goal differential as a team.

He was playing 18:48 per game...1:41pk/1:15pp

I think he's pretty mobile and will be a good partner with Campbell - who did alot for Hjarlmarsson's game...and may do more for Campoli who may be better offensively than Nik. And...if he learns to jump up/catch the play...his numbers may be better (we all see how Kane hits the trailers). He's had a couple of 30pt seasons on some bad teams and at 26yrs old, may be a good fit.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw his +/- numbers and that he is 6 foot 200 lbs...may he do all we hope AND stay in the lineup longer than Kim Johnsson!!!

Very good pick-up. Best part is we did not give up a roster player.

More happy with this than Smid, Vandermeer, or Clark.

I wouldn't say Campoli is a prime PKer, definitely not a Sopel-type. But he can play in that area, and that will help reduce the minutes of some of our stars so they can get more time offensively. I like his mobility and puck moving ability, fits right in with our D-core and he never has had a problem jumping into the rush.

Campoli isn't overly physical either, but he does finish his checks and I wouldn't exactly call him soft either. Some sandpaper in his game for sure. I have a feeling people are looking for something different though -- someone more physical -- those people will be disappointed. I think its a good fit though, much better than the Frolik deal in that sense.

I thought the Hawks were in need of a hard hitting stay at home defenseman.

I am of the camp that prefers balanced defensemen, and from what everyone's saying, I think I'm going to really like this kid. And of course, with Scotty here, there's obviously a reason the Hawks traded that 2nd rounder for Campoli.

Anything couldn't be worse than Boynton at this point, and I know I'm definitely not of the Smid camp, so I don't see why I can't root for this kid. I hope playing on the Hawks gives him that chance to prove himself in the league. And if he's the kind of player I expect, I think the 2nd rounder the Hawks gave up is definitely validated.

Hopefully I'll see Campoli play for the Toronto game on Saturday. I can't wait.

He's an improvement over anyone we would march out there as Hendry's replacement. We are giving up the worst of our three second round picks, and a useless guy in Potulny, so I'm actually fine with this trade. He will be better than Hendry.

HOLY ****!!

Pez you actually happy with something for once?

I didn't know the Hawks had 3 2nd rounders and gave up the lowest of the 3. So this makes the deal even that much more better.

I really do like this fit. I think Bowman hit a good one here. I also think we might see Campoli in a Hawks jersey next season to be honest. But thats a discussion for another time.

Just sucks that this comes with Hendry being out. I do think Hendry is undervalued by many fans as a 5/6 guy. I would think Campoli/Hendry would have been a good pairing to be honest..if that were ever plausable.

Let's put it this way, don't even think about Potunly in this deal..... it was Campoli for a low second. Potunly was never going to see the light of day if they were willing to trade a center... the weakest position and where we need all the depth we can get.... The conditional 7th rounder was if Ottawa resigns him. So I think Campoli is worth the risk of a low second even if we did overpay. Brian Murray said some things which seemed to be decently positive of him, and said that they liked him, but had already decided not to extend an offer to him due to some younger guys coming up in the system, so maybe this is the perfect opportunity for him. We'll see. Best part is, we really aren't asking much of him. No pressure to produce at all, just pressure to not be a liability. How hard is that, he kid, don't **** up. Just go skate well and block some shots, let the 22million dollar men take care of the rest.

Not really too sure why people are so excited for this guy.

We needed a big physical stay at home D-man... instead we got a 6' injury prone guy who is going to play 12 minutes a game.

But whatever, I guess it's a lateral move above Hendry.

Ton tries to say "when healthy he's a 40 point per year guy"... the only years he was healthy were his rookie year where he played 80 games and 08-09' where he played 76 games. His other 4 seasons he has been injury prone as all get out.
