Olsen was god awful last year in Rockford. They have Clendening, Johns, Dahlbeck, and Svedberg ahead of him on the organizational depth chart right now and, when healthy, 8 capable D on the NHL roster. Plus Brown in Moose Jaw. The Hawks have drafted well and built an org. stacked on the back end, making Olsen expendable.

Yes, they have Dalhbeck and Svedberg, who play less minutes then him, higher on the depth chart. Really makes a ton of sense. Hence why they all got called up as black aces.

Ironically the Hogs had the best record in the AHL. Svedberg got injured, they lost 4 straight. Dent commented on how surprised he was that Svedberg meant that much so soon into the season.

I'll put money down Olsen becomes a top 4 defenseman, maybe even top 2 within the next two years.

I'm not complaining about the trade, I get what we had to do, just really think people are undervaluing Olsen as he's the type of Dman the Hawks lack outside of Seabs and Rosy.

That's a pretty easy bet, considering the shambling mound of mess he was traded to.

I think he's got a lot of potential to be top 15-30 I'm the league. He's got a cannon of a shot, his speed and acceleration has greatly improved, positioning was quite good and he's real physical. Pretty much a total package. I was excited to see how well he did and figured he could be moving up as soon as a spot was open.

I agree, I think he has the ability even at a minimum to be a serviceable NHLer to a team and have always said so. I said this even during his craptastic season last year--that the ball was in his court and all he had to do was rehabilitate his game and his attitude and turn his shit around which he appears to be doing so I've never undervalued him. Nevertheless, after this season with the Hogs (assuming he never got called up) it was always going to be another situation like Mo and Pirri where you have to go "there's nothing more he can prove in the AHL really and the kid deserves a looksee at least"---perhaps even moreso in Olsen's case because he has already spent basically a half season with an NHL club and acquitted himself pretty nicely for someone so young at the time. With that in mind, he was just going to be disappointed and likely hella pissed again even if he continues to have a good season this year because I honestly feel the Hawks are going to have a situation like DET did with DeKeyser. I think the Hawks believe Olsen can be an NHLer but they value Johns more at this juncture and in order to get him to sign this coming spring I think they have to guarantee him a spot like DET did with DeKeyser. So what can ya do? I'm sure they probably tried to pawn Beach back off to Tallon Cat but he wasn't falling for the catnip, lol.

Again, I'm obviously a bigger fan of guys who are physical and solid in their own zone. Outside of Seabs we don't have a regular guy to play that style (Rosy helped last season, but has age caught him?). Johns can play that style, but at when? What if with Kostka out we lose Seabs (or any top d man for that matter) and Rosy is still hurting? We don't have anyone who can replicate that style of play now that Olsen is gone outside of maybe Clendening but I haven't heard if he's injured after taking that headshot during the game on Saturday.

The Hawks' 1-6 on the blueline are signed through the end of next season. Figure Johns gets the LeBlanc treatment the second his locker is cleaned out at Notre Dame. Olsen goes from being a guy who would never play here to one with a chance to get some significant burn in Florida.

The Hawks have a third line of Bickell, Shaw and Versteeg that only costs $8.2 million in Cap space in 2014-15 and 2015-16.

He is injured. In terms of just the Hogs, they signed Blake Kessel this week to help on defense. I guess if something were to happen to Seabiscuit they'd call up Dahlbeck who it can be argued has earned at least that consideration based on his surprisingly solid development last season and then on top of that even more developmental improvement this season (who knew the offense could be there? lol) coupled with having worked out like a mo-fo in the past off-season and getting bigger.

LOL! Someone said the exact same thing on Twitter last night and my replay remains the same, "like some straight-up stone-cold J.K. Rowlings shit right there". :icon-lol:

ETA: But I do think this is for the here and now and then likely next season but not necessarily 2015-16 because I maintain the same line I always have on these boards and that's that Danault is the Hawks 3C of the future. He is what was always going to make Bolland expendable on the 3L so logically he ultimately makes even Shaw expendable on the 3L down the road.

My question lies more on ---- If he couldn't replace Rosy while he is injured or even a healthy Brookbank when he was playing D, then why is he still around? I'm sure that would be a cause of concern and it could have been the bargaining chip good enough to do this deal.

I will say this, though. Its good to have a very good system in place as it is.

I approve of the deal, but I was hoping it were Fleischmann or some other player coming back. Not complaining about Versteeg, though. He's a good complement for the 3rd line. He might even boost Shaw's numbers more... lol

Eh, personally I don't read anything into that in terms of it saying something about Olsen. The fact of the matter is that Q is enamored of Brookbank and that's all there is to it. So we know what that means.

At least we know Brookbank won't be on the Wing anymore. We all know Q's done some stupid things, but Brookbank as a Wing? Its for that reason alone I'm glad Versteeg is here.

My favorite teams
 1. Portland Timbers
 1. Chicago Blackhawks
Fair is Fair though...Brookbank has been fairly solid. Nothing that would bump him up in the depth chart but he's not a liability as a #6 d-man.

Brookbank on the wing was due to two things.

1) Hammer was playing with an injury and they may have needed the help on D if it got worse.

2) Q was making a point to Morin that he was more willing to play a Dman on wing than the crappy play away from the puck and lack of in zone responsibility Morin was providing.
