Here's how Mike McCarthy's offenses did every year from 2000 to 2024.

What kind of offense does Mike McCarthy run?:

Mike McCarthy runs a combination of the West Coast offense and the team's previous offense, which he calls the "Texas Coast" offense.

What are the main features of the Texas Coast offense?
  • Emphasis on short passing: The offense focuses on quick passes that require fewer reads.

  • Improved pass protection: The offense places a greater emphasis on pass protection, especially in the second line of defense, which is the running backs.

  • Tempo and pace: The offense uses tempo and pace to open up the opposing defense.

  • Route running: Receivers are asked to time their route running to the quarterback's feet.

  • Play-action game: The offense marries the pass and run games through play-action.
Why did McCarthy make these changes?
  • McCarthy took over play-calling duties from Kellen Moore after the 2022 season.

  • McCarthy wanted to improve efficiency.

  • McCarthy wanted to address the issue of Dak Prescott's interceptions in 2022.

The issue I have with McCarthy's offenses is that while you can rack up a lot of points and yards in the regular season, they don't lend themselves well to a good "risk-reward" ratio when playing against better teams in the playoffs. Often, he will play very conservatively, and lean on his defense. In today's NFL, its a good recipe to getting beat.

Still, his offense overall is as solid a scheme as they come, and is NFL-tested. The issues are more play call-related than scheme-related.

I do think hiring McCarthy is an automatic ticket to a top-half offense in the league, which would be something Bears fans have never really experienced. For that reason alone, I wouldn't rail against the hire. Not among my first few choices, though.

In today's nfl, as you maybe could see from wildcard weekend if you watched the games, "conservative" play is the recipe for winning. Controlling TOP, running the ball to minimize turnovers, being very intentional about taking big shots, and emphasize controlling the LOS is what every coach did this weekend. 😳

This is a very good point. Even offenses with superstar QBs are leaning more on their running game. The Chiefs offense has basically been held afloat the last couple of years by a good running game.

Even with a gunslinger like Baker they were really trying to get the run game working 💪

To be clear, I am not advocating McCarthy as HC. As mentioned above McCarthy’s offenses have been better than what the Bears have had for a very long time. His years with Dallas he was dealing with a lot of things like injured QBs and the most meddling, and somewhat inept, owner in the league. In Chicago he’ll have inept owners but they aren’t involved like JJ. And he does have experience. I think there are probably better choices but I don’t think MM is a disaster waiting to happen.

This doesn't really fit Caleb, who is more of a gunslinger than a disciplined QB. But can you let a proven offensive coach go because your QB isn't the best fit? At least with MM you get a system that is proven.

Right now Caleb style is backyard football, run around and make a play.

That doesn't translate to ANY NFL offense.

Pair McCarthy with Ron Rivera and you are cooking, then they just need a defensive coordinator.

Exactly where I’m at too. A big negative is we’d have to hear over and over how it was a bad hire every time they lose or make a mistake. That feels exhausting.

This is a misnomer though. TB is the 4th best rushing team by yards in the NFL this season. They are rushing team.

Totes, I'm just saying that they didn't get to the playoffs and decide to let Baker just go out there and do baker things.

Yeah. It's kind of interesting because the NFL is always a cycle, and running the football has come back in style again.

Not that long ago it was all this Matt Nagy bullshit of pistol shotgun and stupid passes instead of handing it off.

It's really about teams getting ahead of defenses adjusting to what the league is doing. Everyone builds a team to stop the inordinate amount of passing around the league, so the next guy starts running the ball... and vice versa

Agree, let Rivera get wild with the offense and add a little pizzazz and Bears will be cooking! Dream lineup would be getting Joe Brady over here for DC and watch the Bears cook, but I think he will only leave for a HC job

That's kind of my point - HHM likes to get snide with me just because it is me, but even if McCarthy's style is en vogue right now, the NFL will eventually pivot again, and a system like what Monken and Johnson run tends to be more balanced between risk and conservative, rather than just plan conservative, which is something that will allow for a better state of permanence of excellence rather than McCarthy, who might find the game has changed on him again in a couple more years.

Honestly, the thing that balances that out for me is Caleb Williams himself. If McCarthy and Williams can find a middle ground, they will find themselves at that balance, I think.

Honestly, when it comes down to it, the one real negative I have on McCarthy is the whole teaching the QBs not to throw over the middle thing - sure you can win games like that, but you are going to lose the bigger games when the difference between you and the other team is that you were trying not to make a mistake, while the other team took a risk and reaped a huge reward.

Those kinds of plays often make the difference when you get to the championships and Superbowl.

Out of context posting for the win. Thank you for proving you have a low literacy issue though.

Who was Ron Rivera's OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR when he was running the Commanders? THAT is who I was talking about back then, genius.

Sometimes, when you try too hard, HHM, you really expose just how dumb you are.
