Good luck with the release. I hear a number of different influences in there - some Opeth maybe, some Cradle of Filth, etc.

One criticism though - your drummer is all over the place. For 'credentials' - I have been playing for over 38 years and I teach and custom build drums on the side. I'm more of a 'groove' player ala Keltner, Porcaro, Mattacks, etc, however, I can appreciate metal drumming and guys do who do the blast/8 million time signatures thing - Derek Roddy, Nick Barker, George Kollias as well as the time signature/prog guys - Gavin Harrison, Nick DiVirgilio, but I get the sense that there was a lot of 'overplaying for the sake of overplaying' in a number of instances.

Take it for what it's worth. Good luck!

Cheers. I've heard that from a few people before, sometimes I agree a bit, but hey I'm not the drummer. I play guitar.

Metal? Sure.

Nothing better than listening to Mortician to calm down and relax after a tough Bears game. :D

Seriously: I used to listen to Black and Death Metal mostly when I was younger (Florida Metal like Deicide and Scandinavian bands like Marduk). But that has changed a bit over the years: Now I prefer more melodic stuff (Folk Metal - plenty of great bands especially from Eastern Europe, Viking Metal).

I admit I have no idea what Viking metal is but that is a fucking awesome name for a subgenre

Viking Metal is a mixture of Black or Death and Folk Elements + lyrics about Vikings. But I guess it is not so easy to define that genre. Some bands even wonder why their style is called Viking Metal. lol
Some popular bands are Enslaved from Norway, Thyrfing, Turisas and Tyr from Faroe Islands.

But of course I also have listened (and still do) to more well known bands/genres like Slayer (I fear they are done or at least close after the death of Hanneman) and Anthrax. In fact it all started with those 2 bands. (and Iron Maiden)

My way: 1. Slayer, Anthrax, Maiden, 2. Black/Death, 3. Viking, 4. Folk Metal
Hm: It seems I had switched to more extreme music from 1 to 2 (when I was young and wild :D) but since then I constantly got softer. I wonder what´s next: My guess is pure Folk music. (at least as an alternative to Metal)

Heres one. Best metal albums of all time? For me, it's some early stuff and some new:

1. Queensryche - The Warning
2. Loudness - Thunder In The East. Featuring the amazing Akira Takasaki on guitar
3. Opeth - Blackwater Park
4. Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
5. Tie - Metallica - Ride The Lightning/Megadeth - Killing Is My Business/Maiden - Piece of Mind

And an honorable mention for Venom's 'Black Metal'. Countess Bathory may be the best metal song ever

Cool. Who are your favorite players? I like great players, but also guys who have a unique style and versatility. Guys like Alex Skolnik and Akira Takasaki from Loudness

Or the smoking hot dual lead guitar chicks from 'The Iron Maidens'

As for drumming, that's the challenge. Playing in odd time signatures or in program, but still playing tastefully and with groove and soul. Mike Portnoy could play 138/13 and the go into 679/3 with 8 billion cymbals but he has no groove. I love guys who do both. Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree is just fantastic. For the guy who had the best use of 'technique but tasty' is Mark Brzezcki from Big Country. Obviously not metal but such a ridiculous player. Also featuring one of the most underrated guitar players of all time - Stuart Adamson, he of the e-bow fame.

Isn't it a rule that you have to quit metal by the age of 28?

Wouldn't this be considered math metal? I can dig it. Kinda sounds like the Contortionist. Rename your band Tezzeret just cause.

To be honest I was never one to really have a guitar hero(es) or really care about technical prowess. I've been listening to a lot of Leo Kottke and Jackson C. Frank lately though.

It's kind of the opposite for drummers though, there's definitely a few that stick out to me. Proscriptor McGovern, Tomas Corn, Morgan Agren.

Nice Heid. What rig are you running with for the recording?

listening to this, with the more ambient guitar influence i am trying to recall the name of a band that I used to listen to like 6 years or so ago. They are REALLY heavy ambient but completely instrumental, and it's primarily overdriven guitars and drums. Pretty sure they are Scandinavian. Any idea who I'm thinking of? They were pretty popular and I saw them at the Brew and View years ago...

In Flames?

You know I'm not that much of a gearhead to be honest. Most of the stuff I used in the studio were things that weren't even mine! I actually ended up using our drummer's guitar for most of the recording because the night before one of my scheduled days I broke a saddle on the bridge of mine while restringing. I can't recall the exact make of his guitar, I'd have to ask him. I used a lot of his analog pedals too. He honestly has better gear than mine. I used a Mesa triple rec for most of the recording.

I can say it was then that I fell in love with this:

I wanna shameless plug too! This is my band IllDistortion. We had a recording studio back in college, but our douchebag drummer stole everything when he left. Our guitarist was the singer/screamer then. We were playing about 3 shows a week then. After college, we all had our own careers and it was tough to get together. We then got a female singer. We only practice about once a month now, but we are going to start recording again and doing shows. These songs were all recorded in our basement. They all are mixed terribly, so it is not a good representation, but whatever. IDGAF. And LOL @ myspace. We used to have a nice website, but when we stopped playing shows, we let it die.

EDIT: Sorry to derail the thread for your band Heidenlarm! But I bought the album so...

Sweetness. In an age where mostly everything is digital, its nice to here analog being powered by an all vacuum tube driven head. The saturation can not be matched.
