How good does DE2 need to be?

Got a lot of good discussion and feedback in the WR3 thread, figured I would ask on the other massive hole on the roster. Bears lost their DE2 and DE3/4 from last year in Ngakoue and Green and have replaced them with Jacob Martin. As im sure the learned football scholars on this board know, DL sees heavy rotation in a game with your 3rd and 4th option seeing significant snaps in every game throughout the year, so you really do need to look at the group as a whole versus just the 2 starters.

Right now the Bears DE rotation is Sweat / Walker / Martin / Robinson. I think most people would consider that a relatively weak room compared to the rest of the NFL, especially if we look at the DE rotations of the teams in the playoffs.

So question to you CCS - what do the Bears still need to do at DE (if anything at all) and why?

It doesn’t have to be a first rounder since do have a stud de already. But flus uses that rotation so the value to use first rounder is there if the right guy is there at 9. Same can be said if they go wr but I feel now with Allen they have time to develop one vs dl it’s really bare after sweat

You should aim to get the best player you can at every position period.

Complimentary talk is for backups. The Bears keep following this complimentary bullshit and it doesn't work.

It didn't work with Izzy and Peppers. Even though Izzy was respectable he wasn't good enough to put the Bears passrush over the top even in his best year in 2010

It DEFINITELY didn't work with Shea McClellin and Peppers when the Bears clearly should have taken Chandler Jones

It didn't work with Mack and Floyd when they should have pulled out all of he stops to ad Zdarius Smith instead of signing a bunch of gimmick scrubs for Matt Nagys fake offense in the 2019 offseason

With all of the rule making against defensive play in today's era, your best chance to stop opposing offenses is to load up on as many top passrushers as you can.

I said other because you can find guys after the first round even though that is the preferred way to go about it, the truth is
the other DE just has to be someone that they worry about getting through while double teaming Sweat. Can't just ignore
the other guy or they will pay. Obvious 1st rounder is better but not mandatory today.

If Poles find athletic DE with a lots of promise I'm good with picking one in later rounds. After all Richard Dent was 6 round pick..

How good does he need to be? Good enough to play 40% of the defensive snaps, but will be rotated out on clear pass rushing downs. That's the sense I get anyway.

But the problem is that if you want to put the other team in third and long so you have a good chance of getting the ball back, you better have a really good second pass rusher. The goal is to force them into keeping an eligible receiver in to help block, and still hit the QB. I'd greatly support getting a top DE with the other first round pick if it means beating up our divisional opponents.

If you look across the league most of the playoff teams from last year have at least three on the defensive line that can get after the QB. The Bears have one. What I would say to help Sweat out is a first round DE, another solid veteran to rotate in with Walker like Danna or bring back Ngaoue as a rush specialist and continue to develop Dexter/Pickens.

Some good news for the Bears with a rookie QB, most of the great pass rushing teams are in the AFC.

I voted best remaining FA (presuming it's not an overpriced older vet on namesake > recent production). BPA in draft is also fine if they like a guy's potential. Don't think 1st Rd is a must, but like the QB decision, #9 seems to be win-win-win, regardless of how it goes down. WR-Edge-trade down. Even Alt is a fantastic prospect (don't need a LT IMO), but to stay on topic, I defer to Bears and CCS on best pass rushing prospect.

I personally think this years draft class is really thin at the projected 2nd round DE talents. I wouldnt mind using like #75 and a 2nd next year to move up into the 2nd round but I think there would be a much better WR or OT or DT prospect available than DE given the talent available in this class.

I agree there are 4-5 guys that have really good skills but after that it is thin.

I voted needs to be a first rounder because I think that's the best quality we'll get at this stage in the game.

I think we need somebody opposite Sweat who at least has 8 sack potential.

What's the point of hiring Fluser as the HC if he can't coach up some of the players that were not already upper tier players. Most of the dominant players on the defense were either here before Flus, acquired thru trades or FA's. The Bears are already in the top10 in cap money allocated to the defense. Most of Poles draft picks on defense are good fit players but I wouldn't say any of them are playing way above their draft position, Especially the dline picks last year. LaFleur & Shanahan get more out of less on the offensive side of the ball which allows those teams to spend more resources on defense. Shouldn't it be the other way around for the Bears with a defensive minded head coach.

Hasnt the entire secondary except FS been either fully developed or had the most progress in their development during Eberflus' tenure? How far off was Dexter or Terell Smith from playing above their draft position as rookies?
