Yup, but only one of them was homegrown. 2007 and 2008 were fueled by overspending that came crashing down. It happens.

The Cubs traded their prospects to acquire Aramis and Lofton. So arguably, yes.

How is this better than free agency? If you sign a guy in free agency, you get to keep your prospects.

True, but in free agency, the player could sign elsewhere. In a trade, you trade 'spects away, but you have a better chance to have him and re-sign him. It all depends.
