Wow, thanks for sharing......................NOT

You're welcome...................................NOT

I guess it's a matter of perspective.

You- A former athlete turns down a visit to the White House and is hailed a hero.

Me- A former athlete that was a wives beater is honored with a statue and I can't see him as a hero. But I guess you do.

While most of the time I do believe the sports life and private life are on different levels but this was no fairy tale picnic. If ANY of the current NHL players were accused of HALF these facts, they'd not be playing in the NHL or EVER put on any type of "higher level" for any of their deeds.

"Hull's life away from the ice did not always have the same high that his playing gave him. His first marriage ended while he was still a teenager. His second marriage -- to figure skater Joanne McKay, whom he wed in 1960 -- was filled with charges of mental and physical abuse. In an incident in Hawaii in 1966, Joanne said her husband held her over the balcony after hitting her in the head with her shoe.

After several more abusive incidents, she filed for divorce in 1970. However, she agreed to a reconciliation. In 1978, Hull threatened her with a loaded shotgun. Two years later they were divorced, a development which estranged Hull from his five children for several years.

He married his third wife, Deborah, in 1984. Two years later, Hull, who appeared to have been drinking, was charged with assault and battery against her although she later dropped the complaint. However, Hull pleaded guilty to taking a swing at one of the arresting officers. He was fined $150 and placed on six months court supervision.

In August 1998, Hull was vilified after telling a reporter for the Moscow Times that the black population in America was growing too fast and that "Hitler had some good ideas. He just went a bit too far." When asked if it would be fair to label him a racist, Hull said, "I don't give a damn. I'm not running for any political office." "

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2002-05-21/sports/0205210150_1_bobby-hull-show-unflattering

Hull's off-the-ice problems have been chronicled in bits and pieces through the years. This is the first time the entire package has been presented in one place.

The impression created of one of Chicago's biggest sports icons is unflattering. The program includes an interview with Hull's former wife, Joanne, who details several incidents of Hull beating her, once with a steel-heeled shoe.

Hull's daughter, Michelle, was outspoken about the treatment her mother received. "A lot of bad memories stem from how my dad acted when he was drinking," said Michelle, now a lawyer who works with battered women. "When he had been drinking, you'd just know that you didn't want to be around here."

Hull's son, Brett, also appears on the show. Speaking of his parents' divorce, the Detroit Red Wings star said, "Nobody should live in an environment that's not healthy." Brett acknowledges that his father took little interest in him when he was climbing hockey's ladder to the NHL, but says they have since become closer.

So Hull has a daughter that became a lawyer working with battered woman. Hull has a son that he could not give two shits about until Brett became a hockey superstar.

But some how the electronic and print media manages to give Hull the "Ambassador" a pass. Why?

Your funny, in your own way and how you perceive things.

Your Accusation- I never claimed the athlete who turned down the invitation was a "hero" but believe what you will.

Your Accusation- A former athlete who has had his demons in the past and has certainly tried to atone for them in my perspective is worthy of the recognition given to him, even though I believe the person promoting it is doing it for their own good. If you feel so strongly and knew anything about players and their pasts other then what you have read in the media, you should be offended by Stan getting a statue as well. But then again, you have your own set of glasses you wear. Hell, while we are at it, let's pull down the Jordan statue as well. I am sure you could see the reasoning for that as well.

How exactly has he tried to atone for them?

Did Jordon beat his wife? I must have missed that? We aren't just talking about 1-2 incidences here. I'm not sure what you don't understand. Larmer is 100% correct in this IHF. No question.

Not quite sure how this is a derail either. It's s discussion about someone who was just imortalized again. Sorry you think it's in poor taste to bring up the fact someone that was not a very nice person is hailed as a Hero for this organization.

Answer my question. How exactly did he try to atone for them? He never has. Ever. That's the answer.

It's ok, I answered it for you. And to compare Bobby and Stan, in their off ice adventures, is wrong. And you know it. Stan never beat his wife. Infact he's still married to her.

Every time Bobby Hull is imortalized this discussion will come up. Dead Horse or not it's very pertinent. Hell look at the back lash Kane took for something that really wasn't even his fault.

Funny how the standards have changed isn't it.

Remember, never question anything. Just accept, applaud, and move on.

Oh, and the statues are top notch.

Ironic that I'm just beginning to read The Devil and Bobby Hull.

That's a pretty good read.

As for your first statement, that's what the new fan base apparently does.

And I agree the Statues were very cool. But that doesn't change my opinion of the person one bit.

I am not sure why they had to erect two statues. They have one statue which is supposed to represent their finest players ever to play in the organization. To single out Bobby as deserving of his own statue, when his off ice behavior was criminal, and he left the franchise is really kind of a slap to the guys who are HOFers and stayed with the organization. So he and the organization mended ways after the death of W3.....he needed the job as ambassador as much as McDummy needed to parade him around. As far as erecting one for Stosh, my feelings are cited above. The previous statue honored him. I look at these as another way for McDummy to promote himself using Bobby and Stan as a front. I think the Stanley Cup commercial about the baseball field speaks volumes....

I agree. I also don't think many fully understand just how Criminal those off ice activities were. Or how often the old man arrived first before the Police to save his ass.

Or the fact that no matter how he rails the org for all those years, when he was a drunk, sold all his memorabilia who it was that bought it so that when he died he could leave it in his will for Bobby.

Sad all the way around if you ask me. Any of that crap happened now players would have their ass booted right out of the NHL.

We should compare notes.

This may sound a little crazy, but for some reason when i opened this thread i was expecting some posts talking about the great careers of two great Blackhawks who were justly honored with a statue. Ooops.
