Many of my suburban friends will tell me the UC is surrounded by a giant ghetto and that you're gonna die walking around there.

Probably because they never see homeless people.... there are lots of them around the UC.... but I also see lots of them in the Loop....
I've never had any problems walking the 4 or 5 blocks to the UC.

East of the UC is very cleaned up now for the most part. West is the UC has gotten better, still some work to do. All in all the area isn't what it was 20 years ago anymore. But that's hard to convince some of my friends lol.
